Dear Patrons,

Later today I'll be releasing the Belisarius compilation video - a topic voted for here on Patreon which turned into quite an epic.. 6 episodes and more than 2 hours of video, with some of the most detailed coverage of Justinian's wars yet seen in a video documentary. You can watch it here before it goes public this evening.

When I make compilation videos, I not only remove sponsor spots and create new seamless joins, I also take the opportunity to correct typos and factual mistakes - not usually very many, I'm pleased to say! I thought some of you might be interested in what they were, so here's the list:

  • Justinian's birthplace is probably today in modern North Macedonia, not Serbia (ancient Illyricum).
  • Antonina had not herself been an actress, but was the daughter of an actress.
  • The Battle of Callinicum was fought on Holy Saturday, not Easter Sunday.
  • Belisarius probably fought his delaying action against the Goths outside Rome at the Salarian Bridge, not the Milvian Bridge.

Plus a few typos, that eluded us all!

Thanks again for your support, and making series like this possible. Back with updates for Napoleon in Italy soon...

In the 6th century AD, during the reign of Emperor Justinian, the Roman Empire experienced an extraordinary resurgence, reconquering lands - including Italy, North Africa and Rome itself - that had been lost to the 'barbarians' a century before. Leading these campaigns, a brilliant Roman general named Flavius Belisarius - a skilled tactician, inspirational leader, pragmatic and humane. This is the story of those campaigns, as recorded by Procopius, an eyewitness to many of them, as well as other ancient historians, texts, and archaeological remains.
