Next week can’t come sooner! Great discussion here.

I'm a Diane stan but you have every right to be pissed off with her in this episode. The character's are super human in this and that ofc means they can act like total POS at times. The only defense I'd give her is that right at the start of the episode when she wakes up she screams the child who was bombed to death in the previous episode. The show never lingers on this but it's almost certain she's dealing with some pretty serious PTSD, which would also explain why she keeps talking about the meaninglessness of life. Again, this does not excuse her WHATSOEVER. But it does keep me feeling sympathy for her despite her toxicity. We're off to New MEeeexxxicoooo

I wonder if the difference between how people react to Bojack and Diane is because we see from the start that Bojack is bad to everyone around him and is almost never in the right. Whereas Diane is almost presented as a manic pixie dream girl until you see that she isn't. So instead you see someone who seems like they should be the opposite of Bojack but she's not and so it's more infuriating. Obviously I don't agree with Diane throughout this part of her story but I dont agree with Bojack for the vast majority of his either. So I do think there's a strange disconnect between how Diane is received and how Bojack is because even I dont see them the same way emotionally but logically when i go through it they aren't really different. I dont think Diane being at Bojacks had anything to do with his relationship with Wanda not working out. That was always going to crash and burn because Bojack is Bojack and he hasn't worked through his self destructive tendencies. I dont mean to in anyway invalidate or argue anyone's reaction to either character is right or wrong because that's just not how this works.

Completely understand where you're coming from with Diane. It's really unacceptable behavior and maddening to watch. From my perspective, Diane is essentially what it's like to look at someone with functional depression. It's like they're so afraid of how powerless they are to control their lives that they feel most comfortable(for sure not the right word but using it) when they can guarantee that they will be disappointed in themselves because it gives them a form of constant/structure they're terrified not to have. It's like at least they know one thing for sure.

I feel like the disconnect is very intentional. Since a lot of the show is on one level about different ways to view people. Diane could be Bojack seen from a less personal perspective, which makes you wonder: What's wrong with her? With Bojack, we get to spend a decent amount of time being shown what's wrong with him. With Diane, they turn the audience into all of those people asking, What more could you want? You have a loving partner, Pulitzer prize by your early 30s, you're wealthy, why can't you just shut up and not be depressed?

It's interesting how different I feel about the Diane situation. If my partner went through that and was in a period of depression and lying I would understand and forgive them. They didn't cheat, they didn't harm anyone. They just needed some space and privacy. Does it suck not to be told? Sure. But it's not the end of the world. They're their own person. I've been there. And honestly, PB told Diane to leave. She was really passionate about something and he said that maybe she should go away and then decided he wanted her back when he wanted her back. And then she went and was too invested but couldn't handle that because everyone was saying she shouldn't be. You get punished for caring, you get punished for not caring. So what's good enough? Nothing. Eventually, you realize you don't know yourself at all. I wish she didn't drag Bojack into it, but she also has no other friends. And she doesn't want to talk to PB. Really, what she needs is a therapist, but she's not there yet. I don't feel frustrated or angry with her. I just understand.

Fair assessment. Diane gets too much shit overall, but this one of the handful of moments when she really sucks. Also, it's ok to shit on Bojack. He is garbage, even if you can relate to his struggles from time to time.

Great comment. People tend to say mental health is serious until it’s not convenient for them anymore then they get frustrated. This show just like people is so very complex. I also wonder if Diane being a woman is a factor to why people tend to dislike her. Female characters are more expected to have it together plus their relevance is sometimes just by association to the male characters (her marriage to PB / friendship with bojack). She’s her own person. Right now it isn’t about the other guys, it’s about her. Her perspective, dreams, fears and the challenges she’s facing.

This is where Diane’s character goes from intelligent and self-confident in S1 to a series of character arcs where she’s dumbed down so the show can appeal to a broader audience. Really the worst part of the show (that is otherwise excellent), but her character arcs aren’t too bad, they show real struggles about identity crises etc so I’m sure it’s helped someone out there. I really do miss S1 Diane though.
