The Peregrineâs Talonhad been underway for the better part of a day, w
hen Amira approached Milisandia. She saluted, but the captain impatiently gestured for her to speak.
âCaptain, it seems we have a stowaway.â
âA stowaway? How?â
âOne of Carlottaâs crewâŠshe apparently wouldnât take no for an answer.â
âBring her to me. And Carlotta also.â
Amira saluted and disappeared below decks.
âGods save us from fools andâŠâ Milisandia was saying to herself, when Carlotta emerged from the cabin. âYou wanted to see me, Captain?â she said.
Milisandia stared at her for a moment. âDid you know?â
âKnow what, Capân?â
Just at that moment, Amira emerged onto the deck with Laurala in tow, her hands bound.
âWho is this?â Milisandia asked.
Carlotta seemed truly taken aback. âLaurala, my weather witch.â
âWhat did I tell you when you asked to bring her?â
âThat your weather-witch would handle this voyage.â
âYes, Haramara, who knows the Elven ways of weather.â
âA zephyr, you called her, I think?â
âA weather sorceress like in the old elven tales. But thatâs not the point here. Did you smuggle her aboard in violation of my command?â
âI had no idea Capân.â
âAmira, fetch Haramara. I believe you, Carlotta, but youâre on thin ice. Another mistake from you or yours, and itâs your hide. And YOU! Why are you here?â
Laurala, for her part, was too scared to speak.
âSpeak up,â Carlotta ordered, which evinced a scowl from Milisandia, who wanted to be clear who gave the orders.
âShe didnât know. I came of my own will, Captain. You will need me. I know it.â
Milisandia chuckled. âYOUR own will! What kind of ship does the plump peacock here run? But youâre right.â
Laurala and Carlotta both looked surprised.
âI need an example of discipline aboard the ship. I didnât think anyone would occasion it this early, but here we are. Congratulations, youâve been promoted.â
Laurala looked confused. Just at that moment, Amira returned with a surprised-looking Haramara, and a grinning, curious Gabrielle following.
âStrike the bell,â Milisandia said, âI need the attention of the entire crew for this.â
