Welcome to our ’Intermediate Skills’ collection.

We think that one of the most rewarding skills to enjoy in knitting is that of cabling. Whether it be on a sweater, a hat or even a scarf or shawl, cables are great fun to knit and they look wonderful.

So, we thought it was time Kay took you through every step of how she approaches cabling. Whether you are a cable expert or you're just starting out, in this series Kay will share all her personal little tips and tricks. From yarn choices that work best, to notions that you'll need and even little memory tricks to help you remember certain skills.

Join Kay in the first of this brand new series as she:

  • Talks you through the best types of yarn for creating the perfect looking cable
  • Talks you through the different notions you'll need then shows you 'her' favourites
  • Shows you the techniques needed to create left and right leaning cables
  • Shares with you how 'she' remembers each technique to avoid the dreaded constant referral to a patterns 'key'

Very good tutorial, Kay! Over the years I've learned to forgo the cable needle and knit cables without one. It's a matter of balance and timing so as not to loose any stitches. Hard to convey with the written word. It's a technique that needs to be seen as it's being done.

Right around 8 minutes 40 seconds, right after you've made your cable, it looks like you do an extra wrap (yarn over) just before you make the two purl stitches. I've rewound the video several times, and I can't understand how you're not getting an extra stitch on the needle...but I counted them and you're not! Am I crazy?? (Don't answer that, lol.)

Hi Linda - no Kay didn't do a wrap, she brought her yarn forward so she could purl but the first time she brought her yarn forward, she missed it, so she had to do it again. We would always tell you if Kay introduced something like a wrap in the middle of a cable tutorial. Thanks so much, Dan

Hi Lacy! Thanks so much or your message and it may be we share some cabling without the needle tutorials in future. But 'we' both prefer to cable 'with' a cable needle, which is why this series will always see us using one. As you so rightly state, over years of practice it may be specific knitters do choose to forgo the needle. Right now though, we are lovers of cabling and lovers of the cable needle :-) We just differ on which cable needle. Dan loves the one with ridges and Kay loves the one with the big dip in it......
