AND I CAN STOP HITTING REFRESH! So glad this is back brother! Hope college went ok for the boy?

Varun Laks

Will definitely be checking this one out after work! I love every season of the show, but there's just something about the last (for now) three seasons that makes me look forward to reactions videos even more than for the first three seasons. I think the latter seasons cover a lot of really in-depth topics, that are really ripe for interesting conversations.

It's so good. As much as I'm not a huge fan of amazon as a corp, the rescue of The Expanse and the injection of new budget and bigger resources and larger scope is so good. Season 4 feels new and fresh, with our principles starting off in new areas. I love the Rosci, but seeing Jim and his mum and then Jim and Miller on Earth hit so hard. Seeing Ashford forced to play cop to the inners. That defiance, the call for beltalowda who want homes on new worlds. But I think the biggest thing it says is when Nancy Gao says to Chrisjen, more and more earth ships, filled with the unemployed, the desperate, people who have been on basic waiting for a job for over 15 years. And suddenly there are habitable planets. What you said about there being no good answers is so apt. Because if you're Chrisjen, you can do it Fast, Well or Cheap. You wanna survey the new systems fast? Cool. Holden said they'd been on Ilios in a few weeks after passing through the ring gate. So you can't send 1 research team. Need thousands of ships to even send 1 ship to every new system, that's without resupply or escorts, needing competent researchers aboard, after you've just fought a war against Mars and lost ships in a political coup. So if it's just fast, you send people who don't do a good job and risk an invasion, contamination or something equally terrible. Ok, so you want to do it well? You need ten's of thousands of qualified researchers. How many could there be between the major factions? Earth? Huge unemployment, already shown to outsource their science. Mars? Their industrial military complex drafts a huge portion for military roles which favor innovations in warfare, not in building new worlds, because everyone from Mars who could focus on a new world is in the MCRN terraforming program and can't be spared? Belters? Absolutely they're out there and they're driven, but they have issues operating in atmosphere, low funding, limited resources for the research required and aren't trusted by the inners. So you can't do it fast and well while drawing from the available nations. So what do they do? They turn to corporations. And therefore it isn't cheap. But the corporations don't want just money. No no. They want charters. Rights. Claims to new worlds. And so you get people like Murty. Who land on planets that corporations have never set foot on, that already have settlers on, private interests, with private security. Jules Pierre Mao was just the one who got caught. How many others just like him are out there, filling the vacuum he left behind? And another thing which isn't brought up, but I am very intrigued by: What are the laws in the new systems? International Maritime Law? Who enforces it in the new systems? Who keeps in check the PMC and Corp Sec soldiers who are better funded and outfitted then some militaries? The stakes are so good, so well set, so massive and so new, yet it's very familiar.

This season is a lot slower and more meditative than the other seasons of The Expanse, which is probably why it's often listed as folks' least favorite. But if you like the approach of episode 1, you'll probably enjoy the rest just a much. Personally this is my favorite soundtrack of the whole series. Clinton Shorter does a great job throughout, but this episode alone gives us several bangers: "Go" from the opening of the episode; "To Illus" as the Roci lands, and "First Steps" as Naomi walks on a planet for the first time. You may want to wait until the season is over to do so, but I highly encourage anyone who loves soundtracks to check Season 4's out.

The music of The Expanse is so so so good. But I think you're right, coupled with some of these wide shots of Illus is incredible. It's like Greg says, they let the scenes breathes. I'm also a huge fan of them extending the main theme and playing with similar notes in a way that's soft a subtle but familiar. I get why people feel mixed about season 4, but it's got some much personality. And I don't hate them putting the characters we love in a new styling of show.

Season 4 is a completely different beast from the other seasons and that is why many people think of it as their least favorite season. For me, the more times I watch this season the more I love it and its differences from the other seasons. They do choose to widen the scope of the story but manage to successfully lower the stakes. It's what is needed. This is another up hill of anticipation, setting up the rollercoaster that is the rest of the show.

Fun Fact: the scenes on Ilus/New Terra were filmed in a quarry "a couple of hours" from Toronto. You may have noticed that the aspect ration of the scene changes when they are on Ilus to indicate it's expanssiveness (no pun intended) as opposed to being in the confines of a ship.

The Roci landing sequence and crew walkout were used as the trailer for the season. After the cancellation and the work done by fans and cast toward getting this show renewed, watching that scene was emotional triumph. It was like the Browncoats getting Serenity. The fans had done the impossible, and it made them mighty.

I see your excitement for this new season is certainly on par with ours! Let's answer some of your questions as they come : - The transponder codes in the opening title were always there. But I'm glad you're paying attention to the new things! :D And yes we've seen the name Breck Eisner before, he's one of the recurring (very talented) director of the show. It's also a running joke in the crew that he's the one who asks for the most takes for each shot. - Jim is taking anti-cancer meds for the radiation back on Eros. They said back in those days that he and Miller will need to take them for life. - Yes, "Ilus" is the name given by the belters, "New Terra" by the UN. I love the scene when the Roci lands on and Naomi walks on a planet for the first time, and Jim letting her make her first steps on her own. Peak Expanse, the cinematography, music, editing. Damn this show is great! And so was this great reaction!

Welcome to Season 4! I happened to attend a convention a couple years ago and that line was specifically requested by someone during an Expanse panel and I happened to record it. https://youtu.be/fM2Z_sWwXT8

So glad you're back and the trip went well! There's nothing wrong with different and I'm glad to see you're up for it. This was a great opening episode and your trust and anticipation is great to see. The ride continues and the juice is plentiful.

Season 4 continues to rise in my opinion with more re watches. It just fills in the characters, the world and the changing times so well.

Really well thought out questions and concerns. It is so "expansive"!! I love the landing scene btw. That was the trailer teaser they put out in 2019 because we had a LONG wait for Season 4. It is so beautiful and the CGI is top notch! The filming took place during the winter in a quarry in central Ontario (a place I traveled a lot to as a kid for summer camping!)

Because of the massive fan effort to save the show in May 2018, the writers put in some nods to the fans and reactors who were early adopters and supporters of the show. When Bobbie says "see you Rana", the name comes from the Normies who were watching The Expanse in real time and were one of the first reactors I ever saw. There are some other fan nods during the season as we go along. For example there is a bar on Mars called the Screaming Firehawk!

I can't sync this one, because I don't have the 'what happened before' bits, my version is a different length. Unless you show the actual intro like usual, I can't watch it :(

Warp Reactor

I got you, my friend! If you go to the 1:35 mark on the counter (upper lefthand corner), that is the second the main intro starts. I'm in the middle of making a fool of myself and saying 'Lets fucking go!' :) Let me know if that works!

I usually queue up past the "Previously on The Expanse" part of the on my copy of the episode and maybe a couple of seconds into the opening credits and then pause my copy. Then I play Greg's reaction video and then resume play of my copy when the screens are sync'd up. Works for me at least. Though this episode is odd in that my copy didn't include the "Previously on The Expanse" so when the screen disappeared before the opening credits, I had nothing to sync up with. So I feel your pain Alex. Thanks Greg for the time mark.

Some of my favorite conversations between characters occur in Season 4 -- later in the season, obviously, but so, so good, and so well written. Maybe Season 4 is more "talky" than other seasons, but some of that talk is just so brilliantly done that I can't conceive of rating the season poorly. There are some parts of the season that are near misses for me (to say more at this point would be spoilery, so I'll refrain for now), but on the whole, I think it's right up there with the best stuff this show has done. And I agree, this is an opinion that gets stronger with every rewatch, probably because only on a rewatch do you realize how much the events of this season resonate down the line.

One question I didn't see answered in the comments: The thing sticking through the ring when the Roci passed into Ilus' system is one of the ring comm relays Naomi mentioned Drummer was installing. It's effectively an automated mini-station that has receivers and transmitters on both sides of the ring. So someone in Ilus' system (or one of the other systems that has had a relay installed) can send a message to the relay, which will relay it to Medina, and from there Medina can route it to the Sol Ring's relay to be sent somewhere in the Sol/Earth system.

I know I'm in a relative minority here, but I LOVE Season 4 for so many reasons... the change of pace, production value & cinematography, new genre influences... I could go on and on. The landing scene is nothing short of incredible; the crew's performances are perfect, and the sweeping shots of our 4-person Ka-Tet trekking across Ilus are just awe-inspiring. I couldn't be more excited to see your reactions. Oye, Beltalowda!

Simon Shea

Glad to see you back at watching The Expanse. I had a trip too, so now I get to watch this and the next reaction back to back!
