And just like that...the galaxy awakens

NOTE: I am taking my son to college next week, so The Expanse will have the week off. However as soon as I get back, I will work to give us a 'double feature' in the near future. Appreciate your understanding, my friends, and thank you again for letting me tag along with you all!

I've had one hell of a day at work today and only just got in. This drop has made everything better! I'd completely forgotten to be expecting it. Can't wait to watch!

Joshua

I'm literally sick in bed and have spent all morning frantically refreshing this to see the finale

Alie

Hopefully this will help you feel better!

Joshua

Also Greg, I will saw my left arm off to play in The Expanse RPG with you, just saying...

Kirby Glover

Can't wait to watch this when I get home, love this episode

Stu

So there you have it, you have now finished the intro to The Expanse :) Pretty wild to think the whole protomolecule thing was just to create a Hyperspace Bypass billions of years ago ( The Vogons could have learned a thing or two, 50 years wasn't enough time)

xanderman

Based off of this reaction, I don't know how he is going to handle seasons 5 and 6.

Daxeah

I would be down to ttrpg in the expance world. I haven't looked at the system yet but I know you are a fan of my favorite gm (BLeeM) and would love to tell a story together with you.

T. Arnold Ferguson

# POSSIBLE BOOK SPOILER: Drummr not dying in the show was really a surprise to book readers. the book character (who was not Drummer) in that situation did, in fact, die.

Roger Kingsland

So happy to see you ended up buying The Mercy of Gods! I just finished it yesterday; it proved very difficult to put down. Definitely a different sort of story (and character archetypes) from the Expanse, but really great in its own right... and it'll give you a nice taste of Franck & Abraham's delicious writing style.

Joshua

It already has. Good cathartic cry along! What and episode. What a season.

Roger Kingsland

You might consider starting with a (book spoiler) tag, in case he wants to avoid those!

Blackd0nuts

"We always reach for violence. Let's try something else." Holden is a very polarizing character (and it doesn't help he has some ups and down in the first seasons). But personally I absolutely love this man and what he represents. Of course the scene with Anna and Amos is stellar. Also "Why do you guys have guns?" "The armory was on the way" seems like some Joss Whedon's line. You kept asking what it'd cost them to shut down the reactors. Well, as they said it'd keep a lot of very afraid people in the dark for an unspecified amount of time, which could cause mass panic. But also I'm guessing can be very problematic for the medical stations etc? As for Ashford and the Behemoth, the delay would create the risk they couldn't fire the laser before the station was charged up. PS: Good week at uni then! They grow up so fast :')

Bear with me as I fan girl over all the female characters in this episode! First Bobbie: Ty has explained that the fight that happens between her and her female marine lasts a while because they are both highly trained and worthy opponents. Normally Gunny would make short work of anyone fighting her! It took me FOREVER to realize that the female marine pulled her gun and shot Bobbie as she is being knocked out! Bobbie for her part is trying to save her two marines and unfortunately fails! (for her anyway...) She yells for them to "stand down!" at the beginning and also yells "don't shoot!" just before Amos shoots the other marine. Her "Clear" at the end of the fight is almost heart wrenching as she knows her career as a marine is truly over. Then you have Drummer, I agree how many times does Drummer have to try to sacrifice herself?? For reasons unknown to you (but you might guess) the scene in the elevator shaft had me up and yelling at my TV the first time I saw it. Naomi of course saves the day because, she doesn't need to carry a gun! Finally Clarissa. I am so glad you saw exactly that what she did was what Ren had taught her. Reverse the buffers and the system shuts down. Not only did she shut down the Behemoth, but she literally saves the ENTIRE human race in that moment. No matter what anyone else says about her action, she outdoes Julie in that moment who after all only saved Earth! haha. My final unsubstantiated observation is that Miller turns around, standing on a lake of course, and says "gonna need a ride". I always like to imagine that line was added after the producers knew the show had been saved after Episode 8. I don't know that for sure, but its a nice thought! Enjoy the college drop off, been there! Hope he enjoys his year!

Shawn Anomaly

"Masters Of Tension" The Expanse authors are indeed and it's just ONE of the tons of reasons this show is my all time favorite ANYTHING I've ever watched on a screen (tv show or movie)!

Chad K

Or even S4 E10 because that definitely creates a spark that lights a lot of S5's fire

Brad Johnson

And now the real story begins. Everything up to now was just setting the table :-)

Eric Centea

I’m going to love to hear your takes on the debates of morality, humanity, and power to come! Once you finish the show and read the books I think you should have discussions or your reviews of books 7,8&9… the series ends in such an amazing way. The show has conclusion as well, but the books are 🤌

Muttley

Definitely count me in for some RPG action. I've had the Expanse RPG books on my shelf since they came out and haven't had a chance to play it (too many games, not enough time)

David Schafer

I love how you get so invested in the characters, but also accept that if there's a part of the story that needs to be told, then we have to go with it. That's a true fan. I often feel like I won't add much to the conversation that others have already pointed out in a good way. So I'll add this. Look at the episode titles of the three season finales. Each includes a name. I encourage anyone to look up the background of that name. Dan and Ty know what they're doing, even if they don't let on ;)

Chad K

Hey! Since you mentioned it (at 3:04), my suggestions to enhance the experience includes two items: 1) The backwards counting timer does not work for me because when I go to Amazon prime and check this episode, I have a duration of 42:39 while your timer starts at 42:06. I'm in the USA so it shouldn't be a region thing, but either way, since our durations are different, any backwards timer will not work for keeping place. I know others have this problem, too. I'm assuming the end credits has some fluff or additions that your version does not, because I'm pretty sure the actual content before the credits is identical. A forwards counting timer would solve this (thank you for adding this btw I honestly didn't even notice you added it!), but it leads me into item #2 which is that the addition of a picture-in-picture of the video you are watching somewhere on the screen but heavily blurred to avoid copyright would be also helpful for finding place again. The darkness/colors in the scenes and their transitions would help find our place again if we had to come back to it. Other reactors do this or some version of this. Those are my only suggestions, otherwise I cannot wait for the next stage of this journey!

Matt Drahos

I recommend this show to every female friend who like watch shows. This show has some of the most well written, acted, badass female characters in TV history. I don't think they ever fail a Belchdel-Wallace test. (look it up if unaware of it:)

Matt Drahos

Gotta say this- if The Expanse had ended there, it still would have been the best Science Fiction show of all time. I have really enjoyed the ride with you. I also get misty eyed during certain scenes, to this day, if I immerse myself in it. Just looking back at some moments- 52, the assault on the spin station, shed's head, Miller and Julie in 2x5, Amos and prax 3x6 and being that guy...

Roger Kingsland

I second the super blurry picture-in-picture suggestion; it's by far the best method I've seen on other reaction Patreons! That said, I'm not sure how much extra editing time it'd take... I'm sure this would be a factor to some extent. Re: the backwards timer - it doesn't line up for me either, but I have a useful trick if you're interested! Once you've done your initial sync, wait for the forwards timer on Patreon video *or* the backwards timer on Amazon Prime to reach a timestamp ending in :00, and take a note of the seconds on the other video at that exact moment - e.g. :18. Because the timers are moving in opposite directions, this works both ways - when one timer hits :00, the other will always hit :18! Thus, if you ever need to re-sync, you can pause one video at :00 and resume when the other one hits :18, or vice versa (pause one at :18 and wait for the other to hit :00). Also worth noting: now that WR displays both timers onscreen, this trick can work whether Amazon uses the forwards timer on your device or the backwards one - just sync with the timer moving opposite Amazon's. It's a tad convoluted, and it doesn't help if you need to close out the videos and re-sync later... but if you just need to pause to walk away (or accidentally hit the spacebar/screen/remote, as I often do) it does the trick!

Simon Shea

So awesome to hear you're jumping into Ty and That Guy! Wish my schedule wasn't so full running 3 different campaigns, or I'd jump on board with you for the Expanse RPG

Deana DeWall

I gave up on the syncing and just watch Warp's reaction. I've seen every episode so many times that I always know where he is when he says something.

Deana DeWall

It was a nail biter for sure, but Drummer is a wild card in this series.

Beat Conductor

I have a theory on the operating procedure of the protomolecule and what the Builders were intending. (No spoilers) I think they sent their probes to planets that were already beginning life, but still at the very basic stage. The protomolecule would then hi-jack the single celled life forms and build a Ring. The reasoning behind doing it this way is that the Builders could ensure that they had dibs on all the best planets and that another intelligent species couldn't evolve to challenge them. This also leads me to think the Builders did actually die off a long long time ago, and that humans got a good combination of luck to survive the probe/hi-jack attempt, make it far enough to be space-faring, and discover the protomolecule that missed. It's also highly plausible that the Builders missed with the protomolecule because they didn't account for us having 2 gas giants so far away from our star. This is far from normal for other stellar systems. Usually the gas giants are right next to the star, not in the outer reaches playing goalie for the inner planets.

LightningInvoker

I think you're correct here. The Builders didn't detect human life (human life is too young), but the beginning stages of life on a planet in the habital zone.

LightningInvoker

If I watch Prime on my TV, I only get the count up timer. When I watch on my chromebook I get both. I think him sticking with both the up and down timer is best.

LightningInvoker

Yeah, I'd delete that comment, please. It's not a possible spoiler, it is a direct spoiler for the fate of a book character, Please please no spoilers.

LightningInvoker

As the yooths say these days, "Tension ate" this episode!

LightningInvoker

You know I'm down for TTRPG goodness. I love Jim's line that "we keep reacting with violence to things we don't understand". Man that's such a good line and for fuck sakes SOMEONE needed to say it!! I continue to love how this show continues to show us the different perspectives of people in the solar system. I say it again and again.

Josh M

I would love to play in a game you DM, and would happily pay for a higher level membership to get to play if you created that tier on Patreon. As a heads up, most fans of the Expanse feel like season 4 is the weakest season of the show. That doesn't mean that it's bad, it's actually really good. It's just that the other 5 seasons of the show are some of the greatest television ever created, so really good feels like a significant step down.

aspectsAK

Count me in for TTRPGs. Have been RPGing and some DMing since the late 70's. Got early in on hard sci fi games like GDW's Traveller and more recently Mongoose Publishing version. I'm guessing you will be using the The Expanse RPG system by Green Ronin Publishing. I have the system and would probably need a quick review to get back up to speed with it. Season 4 shows Holden’s unique connection to the rings projecting him down a path that unfortunately opens him to the political power of the solar system and which dials up the risk that he and his crew are thrown to. The season is little slow at parts, but the dangers facing the crew of the Roci, and not all of them due to human violence, are just as deadly to those impacted. Looking forward to seeing your reaction.

aspectsAK

I have a similar situation. I'm streaming this series from my PLEX server and it seems your timer skips the "previously on The Expense" intro so my timer doesn't match yours. I've gotten better at skipping the intro on my copy of the Episode and leaving it open and waiting to see your opening blurb for syncing to appear before unpausing my copy. So far this has worked for me.

Emily Day

I would absolutely love to be able to play in an Expanse TTRPG with you as the DM, sounds like a dream come true! However, I am UK-based so I imagine timezones wouldn't make that work super well, unfortunately. But man oh man, I've loved your reactions so far, but I am buzzing for ones to come, it's gonna be great :D

Ian M

Count me in for the TTRPG boss. Been playing various games since the 80's and love The Expanse universe

Lauralyn

Great watching this with you! I wish I'd learned to play TTRPGs and could play with you as GM. They seem like such fun. I've watched a bunch. None of my friends even play video games like me, so it's never been an option. Have a great trip to college!

Warp Reactor

I will definitely look into the 'blurry'/re-sink anchor points. I'm looking into a new computer and as soon as I have a little more storage to play with this should be doable! Thank you for the suggestion!

Warp Reactor

My friend, if you'd like to play, please know that TTRPG experience is definitely NOT needed. Personally I find tables with newer players incredibly refreshing and very enjoyable! It will be a new system for me as well, so if you'd like to play, we can learn it together :)

Warp Reactor

If you'd like to play, my friend, I would absolutely be willing to work on a schedule that can accommodate your timezone. I've been playing with friends in the UK for years now :)

aspectsAK

Laralyn - I've never seen a game where prior experience was a requirement to join in. In fact, TTRPG games are almost always open to new players as the hobby is very welcoming to new players and hope they become returning players. If Greg is using "The Expanse" RPG system from Green Ronin Publishing, you can download a free copy of the QuickStart rules and read the first 11 pages to get a general rundown of Green Ronin's The Expanse system. Don't worry about the rest of the book unless you decide to run the included game scenario with at least two other players. Even if Greg goes with something else. You will have some idea what to expect though the system will change. One of the jobs of the GM is to help players though the rules system, so new players aren't chucked into the deep side of the pool Link to Quick start rules: https://greenroninstore.com/collections/the-expanse-rpg/products/the-expanse-rpg-quickstart-pdf

Alison Hale

One thing I love about the Expanse is far it goes from the situation pre-Cant to where we are here... and, of course, beyond and beyond and beyond... I like seeing reactors kind of get settled into what they think is how the show is going to be then it adds stuff and keeps knocking people out of that comfort zone, over and over.

Lauralyn

That's exciting - count me in, then if there's still room. 🥰

RogueFirefly

Some Expanse TTRPG adventuring sounds amazing. Glad I decided to follow you after hearing you on the WebDM podcast with Pruitt. Also it blew my mind when I saw the Fringe reactions, no one talks about my favorite show! Lol

Warp Reactor

Awesome, my friend! So glad to have you joining us! Any friend of that scoundrel Pruitt is a friend of mine :D

Simply.Beyond

You say one final good act can’t undo the horrible things someone does. But, if that were true, then you wouldn’t be able to like characters like Ashford and even Amos himself. It’s all about perspective and if they learn anything from their past mistakes. Clarissa realized how wrong she was and risked her life to help Holden instead of killing him and in turn saved the universe. Doesn’t mean she’s forgiven for her crimes (honestly though, there’s a lot of people on this show who are criminals and are free), she does deserve a chance at being rehabbed.

Nrr An

And it isn’t just the ONE act. It’s the decision to try, from right now, to be a better person and do MORE good acts in the future. Everyone has done things they wish they didn’t do. Sure, Peaches went too far, but. There’s the potential for redemption in all of us, if we choose to try to earn it.

SupaManion

Fully agree to THAT: "You say one final good act can’t undo the horrible things someone does. But, if that were true, then you wouldn’t be able to like characters like Ashford and even Amos himself." ... !!!
