Why Littlefield? Who knows. Maybe because of the Earth's magnetic and gravitational fields and the way Walter's device works, that is the simplest place to do it. Maybe they could have picked multiple places but it was the closest to Boston as they could get. There doesn't have to be an 'understandable' reason why. The show's writers are in the driver's seat on that one. They create the Fringe Universe and we're along for the ride :D

I can't help but think that maybe Pete actually did die one of the two times - the crash into the river or the rare disease and Walter cloned him and that's why he has none of the memories Walter brings up. Something is very odd about it (which I'd not have even noticed if you hadn't!). Yet stopping from using that very specific time/transfer machine to instead shift to cloning seems almost too much of a stretch. This show is too much!
