If you’re not already hip to Mr. Ballard, this is a great place to start. He has an amazing way of boiling sweeping sci-fi and apocalyptic stories down to a human level. Surreal and disturbing, he highlights the dark corners and undercurrents lurking just below the surface of conformity.  He has many novels (folks in the states might know him as the inspiration for the movie Crash back in the 90s), but for those with limited time and attention you can’t go wrong with these short stories.
