Honestly I love this series, but this first episode isn't really needed. Kickass animation, but still.

I've been wanting to rewatch this classic with a blind reactor, and I just randomly saw your Hazbin reaction earlier today. This should be fun. :)

I think they were able to put more into the first episode because this was the second series, and they had already established the characters for the most part. The first Full Metal Alchemist anime was made while the manga was still ongoing, and so had to come up with their own original story to make up for what the manga hadn't provided yet. It resulted in a lot of filler-ish episodes and arcs, with about ten episodes of actual story content. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was made after the manga finished, so they were able to follow the full story with little to no filler whatsoever, along with a strong and cohesive plot. Overall, however, this episode isn't terribly important to the core story itself, except to introduce the some of the important characters and concepts, along with some foreshadowing for down the line, such as with the character hints that were dropped about the role of state alchemists, and the references to a war within living memory.
