My advice is just don’t compare it to ATLA. Rate it on its own merits

Both Tenzin and Korra could have done better in their roles. Korra could've been more patient and understanding towards the philosophy of air-bending, but Tenzin also could have tried to find different methods that worked better for Korra's personality. It's interesting when characters at odds with each other are both a bit right and wrong at the same time.

Oh Bolin, man's built like a brickhouse.

I like that she's calling out Tenzin on his own flaws too. At the end of the day, they're both struggling to be like Aang

The problem isn't how Korra behaves. Its the fact that she doesn't improve. She stays the same angry, bratty kid throughout the show and it goes on and rewards her bad behavious more often than not. This episode is the perfect example. And when she does mess up, no matter how bad it is, she just gets handed a solution.

I got my issues when it comes to this show from a writing and politics standpoint. The writing is due to Nickelodeon not being confident in the show at all and one of the better writers of the ATLA not coming back for Korra. The politics are extremely neoliberal as evidenced by the first season focusing on inequality, but arguing for the status quo and the third season not understanding what anarchism is because the creators are liberal and don't understand what anarchism is. It's funny that since this is supposed to be the equivalent of the 1920s which was a time when socialism and communism was on the rise in the real world because of the shitty things capitalists were doing to their workers such as six 12-hour work days, terrible safety procedures, child labor, and a whole lot of other things. And, most of all, wealth inequality. Again, heavily liberalized views on inequality and other topics. That said, I still like the show. Not as good as ATLA, but still entertaining and the third season is absolutely great and as good as ATLA at its best.

The inspiration for Korra's character was to be a foil to Aang - where he started his journey with one element, having traveled the world growing up and a strong spiritual connection, Korra starts her journey with 3 elements and little worldly experience and spirituality. Where he was avoidant/evasive/agile/de-escalation in his approach to conflict and has to learn assertion, Korra is stubborn/head-on/overwhelming/hot tempered and has to learn nuance. Aang struggles with restraining his power to uphold his philosophy and lost culture while trying to meet everyone's expectations of what he should do, where Korra struggles with others restraining and distrusting her and not letting her experience the world experience fuck-ups and growth as a person during her training growing up and then is expected to guide and protect the world she wasn't allowed to be a part of. This show is much better written than a lot of people give it credit for. It still has flaws, of course, but it's so earnest and relatable to what kids labeled gifted/talented go through when they're thrust into life after not getting the kind of challenge they need growing up and having to acquire all of these social/emotional tools later than everyone else, on top of all the other deep and dark themes it addresses. I love it so so so much.

And then consider that not only is Aang a foil to Korra, he's also the person she's been told she *needs to be like*, idolizing him in her mind and making her inability to even begin to get the element so heavily associated with him (considering he was the LAST ONE until Tenzin and later Tenzin's kids were born) to respond to her has to feel so AWFUL.

Ooo and I thought of one more thing: Aang was concerned with upholding the lost tradition and culture of the world during the war, whereas Korra will be contending with what parts of these old systems SHOULD be left behind when they become restrictive and exploitative, and how best to affect change in the world

Alicia that is Aang in the opening. They are showing the Avatars with their respective elements

Princess Paladin

a nice boy? why not a nice girl? ToT

Uh... no she doesn't lol. I won't spoil anything for Alicia but she improves a lot by the later seasons of the show. Even in this episode, she did improve. She took what Tenzin said and applied it in her own way. Yes, she went against Tenzin's wishes and went to the tournament, but this is to show growth on both sides. Korra to listen to her teacher and Tenzin to view Korra as her own person that learns differently than what he's used to instructing. I can't see episode 1 Korra having that kind of humility. Overall she just has the opposite character arc to Aang, instead of being a pacifist that has to learn to take action, she's a hothead that needs to learn diplomacy. You're allowed to not like the way it's written or not like that archetype, but to say she has no growth and stays a brat is just dishonest to me. (And just saying, because I know a bunch of people will be on my ass about me defending Korra, I have my issues with the show too, including how Korra's character is written. I just think people get too reactionary and angry at the show for no reason. These are kids cartoons, let's relax lol.)

GENERAL REMINDER: NO SPOILERS. NO HINTS. DON'T BE THAT PERSON. Spoilers and hints ruin the reactor's experience, and, by extension, OUR experience watching the reactor, which we as Patrons, are paying for.

The character writing in korra is actually good. Without spoilers, it's season 2 which is almost universally panned and that's mainly because it ruins a lot of the mythology in avatar and does a bunch of deus ex machina. Otherwise it's a decent show. It also has the most interesting character in all both series.

Zeallust

I think its funny that people complain about the "deus ex machina" ending of Korra Book 2 but were totally fine with ATLAs series finale relying on 2 deus ex machinas. Ill agree Book 2 is pretty weak, but the mythology argument and the deus ex machina argument are both a buncha bs
