This movie reminds me of great line, if I can remember it accurately. "A good leader is not the one who does the greatest deeds, but can inspire others to achieve their greatest heights." By being such a good, loving and loyal person, he inspired Toothless to throw off the Alpha's control and achieve his potential as an Alpha, himself. He was able to rally his friends out of despair and fear to try and take back their home. As great of a man and Chieftain that Stoick was, this is one area that his son is better. Stoick led by example, by being the biggest, strongest and most fearless, and inspired others to be like him. Hiccup inspired them by letting them be the best of themselves.
