Huh, I actually found Alicent quite likable this episode. Yes, she manipulated Dyanna into keeping quiet about Aegon, but how many noblewomen would have comforted a serving girl like she did? Cersei would have given her over to Qyburn. I don’t think she was being villainous at the end either. Even if she had become resigned to Rhaenyra’s ascension, the reality is that she can’t trust her in the long run, especially now that Rhaenyra is married to Daemon, who just beheaded a man without warning in front of the whole court. Making Aegon a rapist really undermines the “there are no good guys and bad guys” message the show has been promoting. He will forever be a villain now because of it. As touching as Viserys’ efforts to create harmony among his family is, this whole succession crisis started because of his desire to bone a 14-year-old girl. I don’t like the show’s decision to make the Targaryens irreligious. Jaehaerys’ trusted Hand was a Septon, Alysanne’s closest friends were septas—the Faith would have already had a prominent role at court before Alicent came around. I really liked Jace’s portrayal. He’s a Robb Stark/Jon Snow figure who nevertheless has a touch of his mother’s fire. Using that speech to make Aegon look like a buffoon was also quite clever—it would appear that Sansa is not the only character who understands the power of courtesy.

I loved this ep! And I’m back to liking my girl Alicent 😛 Her character continues to be complex. I enjoyed the scene where said to Aegon, you’re not my son. Like the whole point of her fighting is to put *her children* on the throne/save them from Rhaenyra. A lot of people are saying that she interpreted Viserys’s last words “the way she wanted,” but idk, she doesn’t feel that power hungry to me, to personally want power herself. And she doesn’t like her kids. So it’s interesting cuz like… what is she fighting for anymore??

I think this is a case of loving someone even when you don’t like them. Daemon is such a loose canon that I don’t think that anyone can safely trust that he won’t try to take them out on a whim. So I agree that Alicent is thinking of her children’s safety, not of power for herself.
