Surely something needs to come of this whole Riverrun story, otherwise it's been meaningless filler with an offscreen death for an awesome character? Very disappointing.

I agree. The purpose of this scenario in the books seemed to be to give Jamie a good character arc. In the TV show, Jamie's sojourn in the Riverlands has only served to allow him to reiterate his dedication to Cersei and their frankly weird and toxic relationship. I think the DD's are saving up the moment when Jamie discovers Cersei's affair with Lancel for a big dramatic reveal. It might have good screen impact, but most likely Jamie will react vengefully and lash out, maybe killing Cersei. This is not a character arc. This is a retrograde step for Jamie, further into hatred and bitterness. It might not pan out like this but I really feel that Jamie is poorly served by the TV show.
