Westworld update (Patreon)

Westworld tries very hard to seem deep and meaningful – it’s always going on about freedom and evolution and God and Shakespeare, ever hinting at intricate mysteries and conspiracies. By the end of Season 1, I don’t think the show fully delivers on that hype – some of the mysteries just sorta fizzle out, characters are abandoned, Ford’s master plan is a convoluted hand-wavey mess… But there’s still cool stuff worth talking about here. For one thing, the non-linear timeline needs explaining – William as the Man in Black, Dolores as Wyatt, Bernard as Arnold – that stuff actually kinda makes sense. And there are thought-provoking ideas explored about the ‘bicameral mind’, the role of suffering in consciousness, violence as entertainment – Wisecracked draws some interesting parallels to the Biblical garden of Eden… It’s all a bit more fuzzy and freeform than the GOT stuff we usually do – no book series to fall back on here – but I think we can make a cool video out of Westworld.

Also, have you guys seen the new season of Black Mirror? It's pretty great, but none of the episodes I've seen stand out as needing an explainer video. Like, there are some interesting little easter eggs and references to point out, but I don’t think the plots and themes need much explaining… Maybe next season.
