Here it is, at long last: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXu9xjTVHCk

This video is a special one. I think Cersei is one of GRRM's best characters, because she's so terrible, but also so deserving of sympathy. Ever since reading Feast, I've wanted to try to articulate her story. And I took a lot of time making this vid because I wanted to do it right. I think this video does it right – and I hope you enjoy it!

This is a pre-release version just for Patrons. The public version will have acknowledgements at the end, and possibly an Audible ad. But the actual content will be the same, and I wanted to get it to you guys as soon as possible.

With Cersei done, we have time for one more video before GOT S7 – will post some topic ideas soon (:

Thanks so much for your support!

Wonderful video Alt Shift! I can tell you worked your ass off on it, and it more than pays off. By emphasizing the motives and reasons behind Cersei's actions and treatment of others, You showed that while Cersei is not the most liked character in ASOIAF, it is possible to come to appreciate everything she is. Great work and Thanks.

Great video. But no matter how people break Cersei down, I will never sympathize with her. A sociopath at the age of 10 and she just keeps getting worse with age. Just sucks that the show makes Jaime a little bitch who keeps coming back to her, even when he knows she's the reason his remaining child's suicide.

Yeah I hear you. If it weren't for that one fact – that Cersei, at age ten, murdered Melara – I think you could make a compelling argument that Cersei's cruelty and awfulness is largely a result of her life experiences. But since she was a killer so young... perhaps she was just born bad. I guess it's that old nature/nurture thing, eh.

Rikke Holmberg

Even at 10 she would already have been influenced by the way Tywin thinks: Only Lannisters matter. Cersei would have seen killing Melara as self defence. (Like Arya when she killed the stable boy, also at 10?) And the fact that many years later she is still haunted by Melara's screaming in the well, to me indicates that this was more the act of a desperate child trying to live up to her father's standard, than that of a cold and merciless sociopath? But I agree with you on Jaimes arc being much more interesting in the books.

My point wasn't really about Cersei at age 10. More like she's been fucking shit up for others her whole life. And even though she has struggled as a woman, she has no empathy for other women, especially when she just sends them off to Qyburn. There's no coming back from that. I just cannot sympathize with Cersei, regardless of her childhood and marriage.

Rikke Holmberg

And all her life, people have been fucking shit up for her. From whom would she have learned empathy? The only person who seems to have truly loved her for what she is, has been Jaime, and their relationship is secret and forbidden. (And in the books she is clearly loosing even that.) I am of course in no way defending the horrific and absolutely inexcusible acts of Cersei Lannister. But I think GRRM (and Alt in this video) does a very good job of explaining and clarifying what caused her to be this way.

I don't think Cersei is suppose to be sympathetic. I think we're suppose to dislike her. But I think we can still dislike Cersei and also understand why she is the way she is.
