The masked axe-slinger: Friday the 13th | NES Works 113

Oh my god! It's the worst NES game ever! ...is what I'd say if that weren't a wildly off-base claim. Friday the 13th by Atlus and LJN certainly isn't a masterpiece, but like most of LJN's Japan-developed early releases, it attempts to do a whole lot of interesting things with a film license instead of just barfing out some quick, easy, low-effort churn. That Friday the 13th fails to deliver on pretty much all of these ambitions almost doesn't matter, because there are some forward-thinking ideas here that would become baked into the fabric of the medium years later, once other developers figured out how to make them good. Friday the 13th sucks, but it sucks with style. And that's pretty cool. Production notes: Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Evenhanded and thorough analysis into a game like this is the reason your channel shines so bright. Does the game suck? Absolutely. But so many people have blamed bad programmers when you have something ambitious and remarkably functional (some highly regarded games have worse controls than this!), when it's more about the realities of licensed game development. In a way it's bittersweet that the "licensed B-game" is gone nowadays; people with IP to burn just make forgettable mobile games and hope to entice a whale, rather than potential diamonds in the rough held back by deadlines like this one...

I understand why the early turn of the millennium video game critics hated on this game. It has many flaws. It has pacing issues. It's too hard. But I think it would be given much more of a break if it wasn't an LJN licensed game because as you say it has "a lot going on". Being hard wasn't unusual for a game from this era. I think what many critics have in their mind from being a kid is how they didn't know what they were doing. I know I felt that way. The game was also relatively attractive. The game is more brightly colored than horrifying, but I remember the game looking good in the kiosks at the local department store. "...you have to defeat his mother too, in the tradition of Psycho, and Beowulf" ... and Friday the 13th (part 1).
