Apologies that this week's episode can't actually be viewed here on Patreon. One of the games here descends from a franchise comprised entirely of porn, and even though I placed little icons to obscure the pixel-art lady nipples so that no one would succumb to Satan's call to commit onanism, YouTube still confirmed that this material is too spicy for prime time TV. I'm sure the sociopolitical commentary that accompanied the historical retrospective probably played into that as well; we couldn't very well have America's children learning to recognize moral hypocrisy among our elected leaders, now, could we? Best to age gate that.

Anyway, the fun plot twist here is that the game with a bunch of schoolgirls on the cover is not the one that involves spicy commentary. That title just involves confusion over the decision to jam together a Renegade-derived brawler with a Portopia knockoff. There were no rules back then, man. People just did what they wanted.

Next week will be the final Segaiden episode for a while. I know I posted a schedule a few weeks back, but an exciting opportunity has arisen that I couldn't turn down, so it looks like the next three months will see a deep dive into Metroidvania Works to take us through the end of the ’80s before resuming the console chronology. Hope you like exploratory 8-bit games! (I certainly do.)

Winner takes brawl: Sukeban Deka II & Mahjong Sengoku Jidai | Segaiden #052

A slightly spicy episode this week due to some racy historical background behind one of the featured games. In defiance of stereotypes, it's not the game with a bunch of schoolgirls on cover. This episode also contains a lie: It claims to be the final entry for 1987. This turns out not to be true! During production I realized I'd overlooked a few titles along the way, so next week ties a bow on 1987. Apologies for leading you astray. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend either of these games to friends, but in the tradition of classic Video Game History, both of these games are actually pretty interesting despite not necessarily being something you'd want to play in 2023. Sukeban Deka II combines an obvious knockoff (it really wants to be the Kunio games) with a surprising knockoff (it also wants to be Portopia). And the mahjong game, well, it's mahjong. But it looks really nice! And it's also the one presentable member of a family of smut-mongers. Production notes: Why watch when you can read? Age restricted Segaiden video? Likely just due to how violently Sega dominated on the video game scene, right?...

How do we watch this one?
