Last week's episode arrived a day late, so I felt it would be only proper to square the circle by publishing this week's a day early. This video contains a lot of games, but several of them have already been covered (sometimes more than once) in my various video retrospectives, so they get a nice and breezy overview. I do go into much greater detail about Mickey Mousecapade, the strange kickoff to the Capcom/Disney legacy which, in hindsight, bears unmistakable signs of its origins at Hudson...

Mickey Mousecapade/ Joust/ Millipede/ DK Classics retrospective: Slip ’em a Mickey | NES Works #092

Capcom kicks off one of the most important creative threads of the NES's history: Their collaboration with Disney, back in the days when Disney was simply an animation studio struggling to reinvent itself for a new era rather than an all-consuming media megalith. Ah, but this isn't really a Capcom Disney game, is it? Appearances (and packaging logos) can be deceptive... but the proof is in the gameplay, which is pretty uninspiring in this case. Also this episode: A salvo of classic games from HAL and Nintendo. The former gives us acceptable ports of arcade masterpieces Joust and Millipede, while the latter simply slaps a new wrapper on two Famicom launch ROMs without bothering to tidy up those releases' shortcomings despite the availability of more advanced cartridge tech that could have made for, say, a proper conversion of Donkey Kong. For shame. Production note: NES footage captured from @Analogue Nt Mini. Video upscaled to 720 with @Retro Tink 5X (which accounts for the tearing and distortion in vertically scrolling sequences). Ah, Mickey Mousecapade... one of my more hated games, simply because my sister ALWAYS picked it as her game to rent when we'd get to get new games for a week. And we weren't up to beating that second stage at that point in our video game lives. I mean, my quality choice wasn't much better in those days (... Wrestlemania instead of Tecmo Pro Wrestling? What was I thinking?), but... Also, I figured the fairy was supposed to be Tinkerbell, but who knows given the Hudson crossover.

Mickey Mousecapade, aka the game where if one character falls into a pit the other has to go with them because synergy. A deeply irritating, unpleasant game. It makes a LOT more sense now that I know that Hudson developed it.

It drove me simply insane. I was so amped to play this not knowing that this would be my first foray into the dreaded escort mission.
