Things have been so hectic lately I honestly was unsure whether or not I'd be able to publish this year's annual Halloween Castlevania episode in time. But here were are! Just under the wire. And a bit lighter-hearted than usual, with a side episode on a Castlevania side game that barely feels like a Castlevania game. But there's no mistaking its provenance... not with that first stage.

Kid Dracula retrospective: A miserable little pile of satire | NES Works Gaiden #29

Halloween season is upon us, and you know what that means: Where other people decorate their homes with cobwebs and giant skeletons, I decorate mine with a Castlevania-related video. This time around, it's a look at a Castlevania spinoff called Kid Dracula. Well, technically, this video is about Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-Kun! But it's Kid Dracula. It's a little bit Castlevania, a little big Mega Man, and just a few minor quirks shy of being an all-time Famicom classic. Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more! Production notes: - NES and Famicom footage in this episode was captured from @Analogue Nt / Nt Mini / Nt Mini Noir via RGB out. - PS1 footage captured from PlayStation hardware via RGB cable. - Super NES footage captured from Super NES model 2 via JP21 SCART cable. - Standard definition video upscaled to 720 with xRGB Mini Framemeister and @Retro Tink 5X.

Saw an ad for the game boy version in a comic book as a kid & became obsessed with owning it-- my folks eventually tracked KD down on early eBay for christmas, and my playtime in it was probably second only to the Pokémon games. So fun to have it put into context & see some of those same stages + enemies in color!

Really great intro this week, Jeremy, you’re really funny, I mean how you tell a story, I mean, like a clown. I’m just glad you’re here to amuse us. Also that you didn’t throw that glass, it looks pretty nice. Additionally, I wanted to thank you for personalizing this release to the receipt of my first ever Kid Dracula game, courtesy of Limited Run!
