It's been a long, long time since the last N64 Works episode, but since my head has been in the "mid-to-late ’90s" space with Virtual Boy Work and Game Boy Works Color, I wanted to throw the occasional N64 title into the mix from time to time as well. With the system's 23rd anniversary just around the corner, it seemed like a sensible time to bring back N64 Works... at least for a one-off. I won't be producing this series too often, because N64 games are generally much larger and more complex than games on previous systems and take considerably more time to cover properly. So think of this as the video equivalent of a "sometimes food."

Pilotwings 64 retrospective: Air tricks and chill | N64 Works #002

This series' Nintendo 64 launch retrospective wraps up with a look back at the, uh, second N64 launch title: Pilotwings 64. As with Super Mario 64, it builds on a Super NES launch title by expanding its design into proper 3D space while also making its overall design and progression a bit more bite-sized and approachable. Although it's quite dated all these years later, you can definitely see it as a leap forward from what had come before. Also this episode: The Japan-exclusive third launch title, Saikyo Habu Shogi.

While this wasn't the biggest reason I wanted an N64 (that was Star Fox) I did put so much time into Pilotwings 64 that I ended up either perfecting or getting gold on every single category. It's a really good game, even now - I'm not sure any console flight sim has done what it did so well.
