Hey everyone, I've returned from my badly needed vacation and have gotten back up to speed with Video Chronicles. Here's another curiously timely NES Works—this time coinciding with this week's Nintendo Switch Online release of Mighty Bomb Jack. It's a more interesting game than many people realize, I think! One you can probably actually complete on a platform with save states...

Mighty Bomb Jack & Solomon's Key retrospective: Tecmo's inception | NES Works #042

A new third-party challenger has appeared! Tecmo arrives on NES with two simultaneous launches, both of which more or less fall into the puzzle-platformer genre. Solomon's Key and Mighty Bomb Jack are full of arcane secrets and high difficulty levels. Just the kind of thing a growing video game boy needs in his diet.

I was inspired by the Game Center CX episodes featuring this game to go and try and finish it myself... and I'm pretty sure it's impossible unless you're warping.

How many of these mechanics were explained in both games' original manuals? I never even knew about all the hidden stuff in Solomon's Key, so I guess I got the bad ending when I played through the game on VC. Never made it to the end of Mighty Bomb Jack, but I remember that after I posted my high score in the game (from the VC version) on Miiverse, I'd get messages about it even a year later, because apparently hardly anyone really played it, so my post was just about the only one with a score. lol
