Two things about this episode, which continues our Month of Game Boy Reprises For The American Launch (a title that truly just dances off the tongue):

The opening section is material I held over from the Game Boy overview because I didn't want that video to inflate to more than half an hour, but consider a continuation of the system overview;

Super Mario Land is great, and Baseball is not.

That is all.

Oh, also—I noticed last night that there are a bunch of DMs waiting here for me that I never received email notifications for. I will get to those this weekend. Sorry if it seems like I've been ghosting you! You are good and cool! I would never!

More like "stupor Mario bland," am I right??: Baseball & Super Mario Land | Game Boy Works Vol.2 003

Aw, just kidding with that title. Super Mario Land is great. I mean, yes, it is the smallest, slightest, simplest, and easiest of all the first-party Mario platform games. But that's kind of the point? Nintendo needed a Mario launch game for Game Boy's debut, and the console's own creators put one together quite ably. Super Mario Land doesn't hold up especially well when compared side-by-side to every other Mario game, but compare it to literally any action game you could play on the bus or in the backseat of a car in 1989 and it absolutely freakin' rules. Super Mario Land works smartly within the limitations of the system and maxes out the available ROM size—it's literally the biggest and best handheld action game that anyone had made or could have made in 1989, and it deserves respect for that. Also, there's Baseball. I'm always eager for any new coverage of Super Mario Land, so I'm looking forward to making time to watch this! SML is such a fascinating glimpse of a different branch of Mario games, and it's so disappointing we haven't seen a proper spiritual followup, unless we have, in which case I'd love to hear about it from anyone who knows.
