This is such a rough couple episodes, largely because of the way they killed off Fred. Most shows will kill off a character doing some heroic act of self sacrifice, or they'll leave the viewer with a promise that they're not really gone. Take both Cordelia and Daniel Jackson as examples of that. Even when Buffy died, we come to find out later she was in fact resting in peace as opposed to what the Scoobies told themselves prior to resurrecting her(speaking of the Buffy gang, bad look on them stonewalling team Angel like that. Some of them knew Fred). Even without any ascensions or ghostly returns, if you believe in an afterlife, you can at least tell yourself they're in a better place. In Fred's case, not only was her death utterly useless and absolutely brutal, hearing her soul was destroyed on top of that is just gutting. To say everything she was is just gone, like there's nothing left to show she ever existed, that makes this one of the most tragic deaths IMO. Regarding Illyria, considering her reputation and that of the old ones in general, she comes across as surprisingly passive. More curious than belligerent by the end. Almost like reviving her army was a matter of compulsion or habit, not a serious plan(echoed in her comment about "clinging to what's lost"). She's clearly powerful to do some serious damage alone, yet chooses to talk to Wesley who had just recently tried to kill her. I suppose that may be the one small sliver of hope regarding Fred. Given what she said about having some of Fred's memories, and Wes talking about how curious Fred was, perhaps some fragment of Fred's personality embedded itself in Illyria. It would explain why she was drawn to Wesley at the end. It's hard to feel bad for Gunn though. Wes was right in pointing out that nothing at W&H comes without a price. When he said "I didn't think it would be one of us", it was honestly pretty scummy because it wouldn't be any better if it was someone he didn't know. The team was very accepting of him being "the muscle" for years. He wanted something, and part of him was willing to let "someone" be hurt to keep it. Really bittersweet montage at the end as well seeing everyone, even Harmony, grieving as Wes packs up her things and Illyria ponders her place in the world. That closing shot of Fred driving off to college hits really hard, knowing everything that happened with the years she spent in Pylea and later with the team. It just this full circle moment of her life. They did a great job picking that Kim Richey song.

It's just such a tragic end to her character. She hasn't had an easy storyline and it's a tough one to swallow that, not only is she gone, there's nothing of her even left. Ooof. It hurts the heart for sure. What incredible acting by the cast in this one. Alexis Denisof just crushed it; the boy's got range! 👏
