Powerful crying episode

Ba'alWhale34

how did fail guess a brain parasite 5 min in, top 5 writers room moment?

Richard Davies

Amazing performance by David Hewlett in this one.

Lady Beyond The Wall

Just a wonderful episode. Probably my favorite of the whole series to be honest. It makes me cry no matter how many times I've seen it. David and everyone else did such an amazing job with their acting in this one. It all felt very, very real. It's such a beautiful one that honestly, if this were Rodney's last episode and there was no way to save him in the end, I wouldn't have even been mad. I haven't really been commenting much because it's been a really bad few months. We had to put 2 of our cats to sleep in a little less than 2 months, including my cat Dax that I've had since 2008. And I've not taken it well, at all. It happened so close together that I got legitimately worried something was wrong with their food or water and that it would kill our last cat. But the vets assured us that it was just a really, really fucked up coincidence. The universe has been a real asshole the past 3 years.

I loved the way the audience is meant to follow along with Jeannie on the emotional rollercoaster. She makes the episode hit hard.

Mithroch

I have been waiting for your get here. This IS my favorite episode of SG:A. I even rewatched each time you reacted to a Jeanie episode. The vulnerability shown by every character... even Ronon... heck... even Woolsey. Top notch. The writing, too. John's refusal let Rodney say goodbye... the way the final reveal colors all of Jennifer's actions throughout the episode... just so well conceived.

Don’t know why they dont cloak the Jumpers Before entering the Stargate… has that ever been explained? I know they have said that the Wraith would just shoot at the open Stargate, but with the smokescreen it’s a no brainer.

Ugly Pig

I believe it's because the launching of the jumper from Atlantis through the stargate is a fully automated process, and the pilot isn't given control until they're through

Jakob

I don't think the cloak can be on while its going through a wormhole. Its been established in lore that ships cant have shields active when entering or exiting hyperspace. maybe its the same concept. shields and cloaks are both energy fields and hyperspace windows and stargates both use subspace. it cant be a coincidence. All I know is that at no point in the entire show is a jumper cloaked while entering of exiting a stargate

Geonn Cannon

While there are other really good S5 episodes, when I say I like the season, it's largely this episode I'm thinking of. It provides a lot of pros to make up for any cons. I cannot believe they don't use a MALP regularly. My guys, you have a 30/70 chance of dialing a space gate and just walking into orbit. Send a damn probe! Also I like that this is basically the dramatic/serious version of that episode of The Office where Dwight got a concussion. Pam ignored Dwight's symptoms for the same reason! He was being nice and friendly, so she was like, "He's fine, Jim, leave him alone."

This one's always been in my top 3 SGA episodes. It hits hard every time, especially the conversation John and Rodney have on the pier. It also has great banter between the team. Brad's writing and Hewlett's great performance really set this episode apart from others. Season 5 is so peak, I'm really looking forward to seeing your reaction to the rest of it!

brad hawkes

This episode literally makes me cry every single time. My grandmother had alzheimers and was always terrified my dad or myself would get it too, this episode always hit quite close to home. “You’re a good friend Arthur” 🥰🥰

Gage Eakins

I believe the implication is they do use a MALP on the first transit through the gate to a new planet, but they don't send one every time they go through.

Gage Eakins

Yeah this episode is the best in the series. It allows David Hewett to really show how good of an actor he is and everything from the writing to the cinematography is on point.

Gage Eakins

Such a shame that Season 5 was the last season because it probably has the most really good episodes. They really were getting into their stride and then it got canceled.

My condolences for the loss of your cats. I've been through that a few times and it's never any easier. Logan was the first cat I had that was my pet and not a family pet, and since he was a feral kitten when I found him he was very outdoorsy. I had him 4 years and one night he just never came back. In a way I got off easy not having to actually make that call to take him to the vet a final time, but it was also torture in a way holding out hope to some extent for close to a year that he would just show up again one day. I might let a cat roam freely if I live in a quiet subdivision with no major throughways or wooded areas for a couple kilometers in any direction, but short of that I'm only letting them out on a leash, which obviously they hate. Honestly though even in Hamilton where I live, I see coyotes running around in the city like they don't give a shit, so even in urban sprawl there's danger from wildlife. I'm about 80% sure it was a coyote that got him. I've been thinking of getting another for a few years, but I live in an apartment near a busy road, so it would be strictly indoor, and I would need to get 2 because I work long hours. Maybe get a kitten and some old or unfriendly cat nobody else wants.

Timothy Nikiforovs

I'm going to assume the reason they don't is that A, Teyla, Ronon, and other Pegasus contacts likely inform them about many of the planets they're going to, and B, Atlantis has every gate in it's database so they should at least know if the planet has a dagerous environment or if it's a space gate(we'll just say they missed it in the pilot for dramatic effect). Of course, this ep is a perfect example of how things can change pretty quickly, so kind of reckless not sending one.

Easily one of SGA's best episodes, and probably the most anticipated one for most of us at least since the S4 mid season 2 parter. I fortunately haven't had to go through seeing a friend of family member fall victim to a degenerative mental illness, but from what I understand, David did an upstanding job capturing what illnesses like dementia or Alzheimer's can do to someone. The rest of the cast, Kate especially, also really sold how hard this was for their characters. Like OooblyJooblies said, this really is SGA's answer to Meridian, minus the pressure of writing out a character unexpectedly while leaving the door open for a return. Also they both went after your respective favourite characters on the 2 shows. Revealing at the end that early on in the process Rodney had admitted to being in love with Jennifer, and then realizing that what he said had been informing her decisions and her unwillingness to let him go adds a lot to the episode. It's great to see Ronon used in a way that isn't about shooting and hitting things. He showed a lot of empathy, especially for Jeannie, and helped the best way he knew how. Even Woolsey showed a lot of humanity in this episode, and learning that both he and Ronon had to watch relatives go through similar illnesses builds up both of their backstories. However I think Joe actually had the best performance next to David in this episode. That scene on the pier is legendary among SGA fans. I've always said that Rodney is like the little brother he never had(not sure whether Dave was his older or younger brother. Joe is a couple years older than that actor, but then the guy playing Cam's dad was younger than Ben), or at least that he was close to. Sheppard may give Rodney a hard time pretty often, but if there's any doubt how much he values their friendship, this episode puts it to rest. John does everything he can to reassure Rodney that he's not that far gone, even though they know this isn't some years long illness but something that'll play out in days. It's easy to just dismiss his unwillingness to say goodbye then as him simple being a good friend and trying to reassure McKay that he has value beyond being a genius, but when he gets angry and flat out refuses, both the audience and Rodney realize Sheppard is hiding how had this is for him just as much as McKay. He wasn't ready to say goodbye. When he saw how hard this really was for him, he used humor to lighten the mood. Just an outstanding scene. As was discussed on Discord, I think this experience changed Rodney for the better, and one of the biggest drawbacks to SGA ending with 5 seasons is there was less than a season left to explore that character growth. I do always laugh a little when Keller is just crouched over him putting a hole in his head with a Milwaukee drill or whatever brand it was, because all I can think is "Dr. Killer". In regards to the surgery scene, and I don't know if this was intentional, but it kind of touches on a subject explored previously in SG1 S3 in the episode Demons, namely the procedure known as trepanning. While drilling a hole in someone's skull to relieve cranial pressure makes some medical sense, the procedure was often done to let, well, demons out of someone's head when they were acting unusually(or perceived to be). Obviously this was initially going to be a much more extensive operation, but in the end it ended up being a trepanning procedure that did in fact let the "demon"(parasite) out of the brain. Just an interesting thought that occurred to me watching this again. Anyway, simply one of the best eps in the stargate franchise.
