This is probably my favourite season of Angel, I don't know what it is about final seasons but Angel and Buffy truly step it up. That Doctor is the same actor from Torchwood: Miracle Day who *spoilers for others that might not have got their yet* kills Vera by shooting her and putting her in the incineration chamber, I think he's also probably shown up in other things. I'm not sure about the stepping back of Spike's heroic death, but I like Spike so I can accept it. Harmony is fun. You're totally right about Eve being a discount Lila, I'd not thought of that before. This season is like a soft reboot, it feels like what they did with Series 10 of Doctor Who with PCap as a lecturer in a Uni with Bill and Nardole.

I'm assuming Spike's return was planned before the Buffy finale, though I could be wrong. He's a popular character so it makes sense to bring him back. Still they sell it as pretty final the way he goes out in Chosen, so you still get the emotional impact of that last moment between him and Buffy. Also with him having no way of knowing he'd be brought back, he gets the heroic sacrifice. Best of both worlds I suppose. S5 definitely is the most unique of the show. It's fun to have Harmony back in the mix. And yeah that shotgun decapitation was effin brutal. Funny the kids friend was talking about the Punisher, because a move like that would be a great fit for that character.
