Yeah, you slightly misinterpreted this. Instead of being one in billions, slayers are now maybe one in hundreds of thousands, but it's still a hero role, a mystical legacy. It's just pulling it out of the control of the patriarchal mystical forces. It's a great windup of the initial concept of reversing the sexism of horror/superhero stories and that Buffy's loneliness is the problem the series then has to solve. That said - I totally agree that in the peak high-school period, from early to mid season 2 to the end of season 3, that's where the true classic Buffy stories happen, full of the most thematic resonance about adolescence as a monster movie etc, and everything else is touch and go. Super fun to have watched so much of it with you though.

I absolutely love this finale. The ENTIRE run of the show, Buffy tried so hard to balance her Slayer life with her personal/regular life. It was so important to her. But time and time again, the weight of being the Slayer came down on her, and the Slayer life ruled so much of what she had to do. So that final shot, with no words and that that small smile on her face, to me, said EVERYTHING. The weight of the world is finally evenly distributed and it's not all on her. That alone made EVERYTHING that happened in the finale, and in seasons and episodes that may not have been my favorite, worth it all. It meant a lot to me.
