One Who Walks Behind

Fun reaction, good episode but I agree that it could have benefitted from a longer run time. The concept of being trapped 'without' a gate was done in season 1 and done better there due to the more immediate danger Jack and Sam where in at the time. There it was all more densely packed and made for a more engaging watch where here we had everyone safe if separated. But the acting was still great, the visuals were gorgeous and the opening was different and fun. As always, looking forward to the next one.

Honestly, I don't think I appreciated this episode until the last couple years or so. I always thought it was kind of slow. I like your viewing it for the wholesomeness. It is very sweet. I think it's very telling that Daniel is the first to recognize the transformation that Jack has experienced with this people. To me, Stargate has always been about the unlikely friendship between Jack and Daniel that started in the movie. When we're honest about who Jack is, he's the fighter that will defend to the death what's worth fighting for. This is also the bond he has with Teal'c - you and Hammond both acknowledged it in this episode. However, when his ability to fight for the greater good is cut off, or when his greater good is taken away beyond his control, he's content with "simpler" things. He can make nails to help his neighbor build a house, or build a canoe to go fishing every day...as long as "simpler" still means he's providing for those who rely on his labor. As soon as the window to the bigger world is open though, you can't stop him stepping into, I mean, through it.

I would like to say a lot about this episode. But I feel like everything would be spoiler some how. So I am gonna go with that I am really excited about the fact that you enjoy the Show so far. :)

I kinda like this one for the wormhole mechanics, we learn more how the gate works, what you can do with it, why it wouldn't work, like being able to dial it but not go through, then using the unstable vortex to create a cavern, and we also learn how robust it is, withstanding a meteor impact, so it's very durable.

Some great comments by you and others about this one. I like this one and thinking about it I do agree this would have been a suitable story for a longer run time. It can be a shame when the telling of stories is confined to the mechanics of a 20-24 40ish min episode time slot with ad breaks. But that was the reality before the proliferation of mini series and multiple streaming services which don't have to necessarily play by those rules. I think we as viewers have really benefited more in recent history from shorter run shows with perhaps less padding. I do count SG1 as one of the few shows I've seen that did primarily succeed in rising to that challenge of producing reasonably varried with engaging stories within the parameters of the time.

Stef Furness

Speaking of ad breaks, I've been meaning to mention, you know by now this was aired on the premium channel Showtime through season 5 - there were no ad breaks. Amazon Prime has the show available without the commercial cuts. It's a little smoother storytelling.

This one was just OK to me. I don't have a problem per se with the O'Neill/Laira pairing, I think they work well enough together. It's just that you only have 45 minutes to tell that story, and you have to squeeze in meteorites and event horizons and particle beams too, so obviously it's rushed. This might have worked better as a 2-3 ep arc, but at the same time I don't think the story is worth taking up 2-3 eps. I guess there will be a little O'Neill running around some day though. Also I like that Jack and Paynan were able to bury the hatchet. Couple things bugged me. Garan brings Jack food because he feels guilty that he's trapped there, but he won't help the man dig? Second, Teal'c's rescue plan makes no sense. The rope shouldn't reintegrate on the other side till Teal'c and the harpoon gun he's holding are all the way through this side, so he's gonna have mad slack. Also why didn't they just fire a few 40mm grenades through? The explosions should have broken up the rock which would then fall into the incoming event horizon and dematerialize. That to me would be the best way to do it.

I liked this whole alone and slow episode. And it was apparently such a good concept they recycled it for the spinoff.

Stef Furness

It's recycled in way more than just Stargate. As a storytelling trope, it's used often because it's effective. No one wants to be stranded away from everything and everyone that's familiar to them, but the human condition requires us to persevere, overcome, and adapt. Every shipwreck and kidnapping story is this concept.

I was wondering why they needed that particle beam in the first place. They managed to open the gate, so shouldn't "opening wave" dematerialize ground in front of it?
