Hi Everyone!

While I don’t usually comment on ongoing polls, a few things have come up concerning the Mystery that seem worth mentioning... and it gives me an opportunity to share this fantastic Wandslinger image from Julio Azevedo!

Regarding the Mystery:

1. I will be using the new optional rules for rangers from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.

2. The Horizon Walker Ranger is, it turns out, a terrible choice for wielding a double scimitar. The “Planar Warrior” feature allows the HW to use a bonus action to add 1d8 damage to their next attack. The distinctive feature of the double scimitar is being able to use a bonus action to make a secondary attack. If the Horizon Walker is using a double scimitar, they would constantly have to choose which of these to use.

The upshot of this is that if you really want our Mystery to use a double bladed scimitar, you should avoid Horizon Walker; or if you really like Horizon Walker, you should choose a different weapon, as either bow or shield would be fine choices for them.

3. For people who aren’t familiar with the Glory paladin (as it’s in Tasha’s), its third level effects add heroism and guiding bolt to its spells, and it can channel divinity either to boost athletic prowess or to inspire allies after smiting a foe. The general idea of the Mystery as a paladin would be to reflect a strong tie to their patron ancestor, not faith in a broader religion.

Thanks! While normally I don’t want mechanics to intrude on this experience, I also don’t want us to create a character that ends up being frustrating to actually play.

While I'm in favor of paladin, I will note that HW ranger could just never take the DBS feat for the bonus action attack and just use the attacks they get without that feat with the weapon. Though at that point it isn't the greatest choice for a two-handed weapon.

By the rules in Rising From The Last War, the DBS doesn't require a feat to make an offhand attack; it's part of the special quality of the weapon, which is essentially the same as wielding a longsword and dagger. The Revenant Blade feat in Rising allows the DBS to be treated as a Finesse weapon and grants a +1 AC while wielding it, similar to Dual Wielder. it's absolutely true that they could just wield it without making the secondary attack, but at that point they're essentially just wielding a scimitar in two hands (without even getting the damage benefit of a versatile weapon). That's certainly possible. It's just a little odd, given that the story of the Valenar is martial excellence, to be failing to make the most of the weapon. If the HW Ranger chooses shield or bow, they get full use of their ancestral weapon (not all Valenar use the DBS!); or if they're a Monster Slayer, they can use Slayer's Prey while making double attacks. There's lots of good options here; the HWR+DBS is just a particularly poor one. Though again, if people want that combination, we'll do it! I didn't take it off the poll, I just wanted to point it out so people were making an informed decision. I like the HWR, or I wouldn't have included it; but that's why we have the options of shield and bow as well as the DBS.
