While my next major article will deal with the moons, I've got a few IFAQs in the queue. This one deals with an aspect of a question raised by Mariamow: How did the Five Nations become the nations they are today?

Thanks for your support!

IFAQ: Galifar - One Nation or Five?

As time allows I like to address shorter questions raised by my supporters. This one comes from Mariamow: I would love to see a breakdown of the fashion of the nations! Specifically how things were pre-last war mostly all being a single nation, how it evolved and why it evolved in that way.

Hi Keith, I love these historical articles, as I always want to ground my games in Eberron's lore and culture. While we're on the topic of the culture of the nations, I'd like to ask you a question that matters to a supplement I'm currently working on. In 3rd edition canon, it says that the Deneith warlords ruled pre-Karrnath for centuries before their rulership was challenged and there was conflict and war for 200 years before Karrn was born and the Deneith warlords eventually pledged themselves to Karrn and helped him conquer and carve out Karrnath proper and attempt to conquer the rest of Khorvaire. My question is... given that they were in power for somewhere around 400 years, and then another 200 years but contested or maybe nominally, should we assume that some of Karrnath's culture is actually the culture of the Deneith warlords/bloodline? My line of thinking is that these people were very martial (mercenaries) even before the Mark of Sentinel. Then the dragonmark manifests and this boosts their martial prowess even more. Not only that, it grants them advantages to Insight. It seems to me that some of Karrnath's culture comes from the fact that Karrn himself was born in a region ruled for centuries by very martial folks, and folks that would be somewhat no-nonsense because of their bonus to Sense Motive/Insight, and folks that probably speak minimally to let other people do the talking and glean more information from them through again, Sense Motive/Insight (the skill works better the more other people talk). So maybe the reason for the stereotypical militaristic, no-nonsense approach in Karrnath is in part due to the fact that Deneith ruled there for centuries before Karrn the Conqueror was born, and given that they pledged themselves to him, they probably continued to have some influence. Sorry for the long post; I'm curious to know your thoughts. Thanks again Keith!

It's a good question, but the answer is a little long and complicated (and interesting) for me to write as a comment. I'll add this to the IFAQ list and answer it as soon as I have time.

Thank you Keith, I'm looking forward to it. My supplement is exploring House Deneith and this was one approach I was taking to the history of the bloodline. Then I read your article and it seemed fitting to ask.
