My latest post addresses Eberron questions from Patreon supporters, including...
  • What would I consider a master list of races for Eberron?
  • What's the difference between Goblin and goblin, and are bugbears a subrace?
  • Does the Silver Flame have a presence in Darguun?
  • Is the existence of the Overlords common knowledge?

I've got many more questions in the pile for future posts, but feel free to ask more! Thank you for your support.

Q&A: Player Races, Goblins and Overlords

I've collected a lot of questions from my Patreon supporters over the last few months - some related to Eberron, some to Phoenix: Dawn Command, Illimat, or other things. I'll be working through the list as time permits. Here's the first installment.

You mention that there are some dragons that do things in history with names very similar to some of the sovereigns. Other than Ourelonastrix teaching the giants, can you think of any others? I know there was Vvaraak, but I can't think of any sovereigns that fit unless you go pre-schism & use a tenuous link to the shadow by the scaled apostate being a black dragon who brought "fire" to the orcs & maybe more to others.

Few have been mentioned by name, because the idea is that those names have been long, long lost to history. The only I remember right now are Dularahnak and Dulazarak, both named in Dragons of Eberron. But it's the basis of Thir and the Church of the Wyrm Ascendant... and something hinted at from the very beginning on pages 68-70 of the 3.5 ECS. In that original description, it's noted that the Sovereigns and Six are sometimes depicted as dragons. Aureon is represented as a blue dragon - like Ourelonastrix. Dol Arrah can be depicted as a red dragon - and when we depicted Dularahnak in Dragons of Eberron, she's a red dragon. Beyond that: the draconic religion of Thir is based on emulating Sovereign archetypes. Vvaraak wasn't the original model for Arawai, but she's clearly a Child of Eberron (Dragons of Eberron page 30). The actions of dragons following these archetypes could have produced Sovereign myths, even though the dragon clearly wasn't a Sovereign. So we've never produced a concrete list of the original fifteen beings in the Age of Demons that may have served as inspiration for the Sovereigns and Six. But it's implied that they existed, and that list in the 3.5 ECS is the foundation. We might never name the dragon that inspired Boldrei (or that was *inspired by Boldrei* if you prefer to think of it that way)... but per ECS p.69 we can assume she was a copper dragon.

As a side note, I prefer the myth that maintains that Bel Shalor was the original inspiration for the Shadow (ECG p.29). In the ECS it's noted that sometimes the Shadow is depicted as a shadow dragon, but more typically just as a shadow.

Thanks! I really appreciate the info, knowledge of what they did during 4e was painful & limited so I'll have to check those out. having some of them not linked to anyone specific is great & I don't feel like they all (or even a majority)need a clear analogue. Boldrei not having one fits extremely well IMO since it allows the gm to fill it in & anyone to suggest that maybe she's a mortal wife Ourelonastrix took then may or may not have 3.5PaO>3.5PaO her into a copper dragon during the age of giants without conflicting anything :D
