The questions you're asking are definitely the right ones. I think what makes star wars unique is what it has to say about heroism. The Jedi aren't just any swashbuckling hero it is a lot more complex than that. Your questions about the dark and the light are also right. You will come to learn more about it in the next movie and the prequels and sequels as well as the animated stuff.

the special edition edits/additions stick out like sore thumbs. this was the masterpiece of the OT and the changes are not needed.

I suspect Darth killed the lieutenants on his ship because it was a projection of his hatred towards himself. At the end, he’s too despondent about his own failure with Luke to torture any subordinate.

Recently I've felt like Disney has completely ruined Star Wars for me, but I'm glad that's not been the case, the ❤️ is still there. There is sooooo much lore to this franchise, books, comics, video games, shows. So try not to feel overwhelmed by it all, be careful Meg haha. Myself I'd recommend the Dark Empire comic series, and the Thrawn Trilogy which both take place a few years after ROTJ. Both of which you can enjoy at your leisure, the latter I'll probably send you a link to soon. It's also nice to see somebody be sympathetic to Lando for a fuckin' change ha.
