This may be the first funk type drum solo of Buddy Rich I share with you here. This "Paul's Tune" is pretty rare chart that only 3 takes can be found on the internet and only two of them have drum solo. Please tell me if you know more takes other than the one from the album and the 2 live records of '71.

Beside the incredible performance on the rhythm patterns and the interplay during this chart(I could even spend entire day only talking about those), the drum solo is also incredible.

Unlike other swing charts, Buddy uses more straight feel phrases that are played very tightly. The crisp sound of Fibes snare is doing the best job for that too.

There are two most essential phrases I should note here.

One is R L R R LRRLR phrase. This is probably the most frequently used phrase of Buddy. On this chart, the 8th notes part is played straight. This makes the LRRL part a lot harder to make it clear, and in time.

Second is RL K K phrase on the 2nd page. This phrase is very hard especially when you are using the large bass drum with no mute. It's very easy to lose the timing on the bass drum, but it makes the feeling of acceleration to the solo which is very essential for Buddy Rich type drum solo.

I have played this solo(I haven't made the sheets back then) so if you have any questions about how to play this, feel free to post comments about it.

Thank you for reading and as always, keep swingin'!
