I'm excited, you can watch the fate series in whatever order you want tbh, the majority of the spinoffs are all unrelated stories that just have similar characteristics.

Fa!Sal

Who's gonna bet that she will simp for Gill 😂

SalmonYu

I would recommend watching F/Z on Netflix since it has the blu-ray version. Better quality. and its got scenes that were cut out for the broadcast version (the one CR has).

JJ

lol when you first pronounce his name, I thought you said "Cutie-sugu". Then realized you said he was cute, before that xD

Declan Gastineau

To clarify for the future, UBW is "Unlimited Blade Works." You were close at the beginning, but near the end you said "The Ultimate Blade" (though you later got "Ultimate Blade Works") so I figured I'd clarify. Looking forward to the rest of the reactions!

Declan Gastineau

Not ashamed to say I’d simp for Saber, and more so the female MC of UBW (to not spoil/sound creepy). And possibly Kiritsugu, though that’s a bit less simpy, more respect.

Declan Gastineau

I personally support watching Zero first because I think UBW doesn't explain the rules and premise extremely well, which could result in a lot of confusion. While Fate/Zero is a prequel to Fate/Stay Night the visual novel, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works the anime was actually made after Fate/Zero, and I think that is reflected in how it kind of expects you to understand some of the ideas without explaining them, but maybe it's just more mysterious. There was a Fate/Stay Night anime released before Fate/Zero (made by a different studio), but it covered a mixture of storylines from the original visual novel and is considered by most to be a poor adaptation compared to UBW, which covers one of the paths of the visual novel.

Sayyongtou

anime 101 is to don't stress yourself remembering everybody name because that is kinda impossible. instead, try to keep track of the most important characters.

Jake Thompson

Fate tells the same story 3 different ways, with Fate/Stay Night, UBW and Heaven's feel. Zero is the only consistent standalone, so I feel it's the best starting point both chronologically and thematically.

Equinox

You are in for a wild ride full of emotions!

Matthew Wise

Just relating to the comment at the end of the vid about whether watching UBW first would be better because you'd already have an idea of who the characters are and would appreciate it more. That is true and is the main arument for watchin a UBW first, but UBW wasn't written to do that. UBW is written in a way that pays off better if you've already seen Zero, for the best fate/zero exerience without comprimising the UBW exerience you kind of have to see fate stay/night 2006. That said more is made of the watch order than what should be and the difference in experience isn't huge.

Naka

I'll be honest, watch order doesn't matter too much in the grand scheme of things. Fate Zero spoils some things in Fate: UBW, and UBW will spoil things in Fate Zero. And either way, you still can't understand everything that happens unless you decide to go and read the Fate Wikipedia. The main thing I'd say is in favor of watching Fate Zero before UBW is that Zero does a better job of explaining the universe to newcomers. So don't worry about trying to keep track of all the information. It's pretty much impossible to learn or make sense of everything unless you read the Wiki. And I'm sure that lots of people will doubtless just comment whatever you might miss. lol

Finn Ryan

Well that is just not true lmao. UBW source material is the original so it was intended to be consumed first. Not that I care about the watch order lmao just don't spread misinformation

Awesome Monkey

In my opinion, starting with Fate/Zero was the way to go. The first episode is a big exposition dump, but you don't get near as much information in Unlimited Blade Works so it's a lot easier to understand the world and how Fate actually works. Plus, the stories of both are pretty separated so it's not really an issue of you should've gotten emotionally attached to the characters in UBW first. Fate can be pretty complicated and I think the easiest way to understand it is to start with Zero.

gruntmaster1

Do they know who they will summon? It depends. As mentioned in the episode, they need a relic associated with the servant in order to summon them and some relics might be connected to several servants. E.g. when using the scabard of excalibur, you would expect only to summon king arthur, while if it was a piece of the round table, it could be any of the knights of the round table.

SalmonYu

anywhere that has the blu-ray, i know netflix subs for anime can be bad

Frank Rosales

Your assessment of watching a Prequel first is actually on point with why the others wanted you to start with UBW. Either way it's still entertaining. People probably wouldn't hold it against you if you took a peak at the Prologue of UBW just to see if that's something you would have wanted to start out with.

Danny

So yes ALOT of info crammed into one episode. There was quite alot you missed but its completely reasonable cuz you are not meant to get everything especially not without rewatching it, which I highly recommend you do b4 you move on. But the quick run down is that the story is about the Holy Grail War and while they call it a "war" its not a very big one as the only participants are 7 mages and 7 servants. Now think of these mages like Harry Potter world. They blend into regular society but also have their own society and culture. Now 7 masters are chosen to fight for this omnipotent grail that grants any wish. These masters must summon 7 legendary heroes aka Servants to fight alongside them. These 7 servants are basically historical figures of our past in myths or legends. For example, as they pointed out, Kiritsugu and his wife Iri wanted to summon King Arthur Pendragon using the scabbard of Excalibur as a catalyst. These 7 heroes are separated into 7 different classes and basically only the last one standing gets to win the grail. A battle royale essentially. So the end where they summoned their servants. The woman at the very end was King Arthur. As for why she's a woman, well they will get there in the next episode lol.

Kamui

SMF, Fate Zero is not a mistake to start with!

HelNurath

A huge info dump is actually more confusing and it is in no way a better explanation of the rules and the premise than gradual explanation in SN.

Zaj

Don't worry if you missed anything, or if you don't remember names later on. It'll become clear as you progress.

Xanbry

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matthew Wise

I will take responsibility for the misunderstanding cos I used the word 'written' and i get you could have misconstrued this as a reference to the VN but thats not what i was talking about. The anime fate zero was written before the anime UBW, which is not a 1:1 correlation to the VN. The producers wern't like hold up guys, don't watch this show till we win the contract for ubw and heaven's feel and have fully produced them before watching this. XD

KeanuofRivia

It's a good thing you picked Zero to watch first. Zero is a HUUGE infor dump of lore for the series. Honestly the original Stay Night doesn't cover much lore. It tells a story about specific characters more than the History of the Holy Grail Wars. Then there's Unlimited Blade Works which leaves out ALOT of info and lore as it assumes you've already seen the other 2 series first. This was definitely the best one for you to watch first. If you'd started with UBW you probably wouldn't know what's going on for the entire series. It just assumes you already know so much. As for the original Stay Night it's obviously up to you whether you want to watch it at all. It is probably the lowest quality Fate series out there. Made by a different studio. Stay Night, UBW, and the three Heavens Feel movies are all just different iterations of the same story following slightly-to-very different paths. Any other Fate series I haven't mentioned here is pretty much standalone and can be watched whenever you want except for Fate Grand Order which has a specific chronological watch order.

KeanuofRivia

Yeah but there's some debate on whether SN is worth watching from a quality standpoint. I personally found SN to be my least liked Fate series besides the Illya series. I'd be all for Ufotable remaking SN

GrimmxLaw22

watching Zero first won’t be a regret I’m sure, you will just need to watch more of the show is all.

BuddyBigs

UBW eases you into the lore rather than throwing it at you like Zero. BUT Zero gives the series more ground to get you invested imo. Super glad you're on this series!!!

Kyle Smith

I personally think it doesn't really matter where you start. But there is one simple fact. The original source material was the first 3 routes long before Zero ever existed and sets up the lore and world building without the need of preexisting knowledge. Zero does this less so and just info dumps you at the beginning of the show which leaves a lot of to think about and potential confusion. There is a youtuber by the name of MrHunteru who did a video on the best way to start the Fate Franchise and actually did a test where he had 10 of his friends start it. He had 5 start with Zero and 5 start with UBW and the 5 that started with UBW were far more invested and less confused then the 5 that started with Zero. While I agree 10 people is a small sample size and isn't enough to fully prove anything. It is better then anything I have seen on the topic.

Matthew Wise

I agree that it doesn’t matter where you start, so long as you persevere and the show is something you would like you will enjoy it regardless. I do think watching UBW first does marginally improve the fate zero experience as I think the fate zero experience marginally improves the UBW experience. I have read the VNs I don’t personally find them to be applicable to this conversation because I found the experience to be very different from the anime experience. Probably best we don’t get into that one though. Please take no offence but I am afraid I can’t take the experiment seriously as it does come down to a matter of preference. Anecdotally I have friends who were put off by the first two episodes of UBW, partly due to their length but also because they saw a couple highschool teenagers, OTT reactions and facial expressions, fan service and some cool fight scenes and got a shallow impression of the show. Fate zero does also present barriers to entry of course with the info dumping, but in my circles the more ‘adult’ or ‘seinen’ style made it easier for people to give it a chance and engage. Totally appreciate SMF will likely appreciate the lighter notes in UBW more than fate zero so engagement isn’t the issue, though I would also say I actually advocated for fate S/N 2006 as a first watch, though I appreciate it’s significantly less popular and no one voted on it. Sorry for the essay, I have time to kill on the train home.

Pedro Martinez

I can see that there is no shortage of Fate lovers here but please do not push your elitist opinions onto a newcomer to the series. Constant arguments might make even the best series feel bitter.

HelNurath

The problem is that if you watch Zero first it sets high expectations for the rest of the franchise, and watching SN routes after that may seem underwhelming. They are good, but not as good as Zero, and watching the series in this order makes SN even more overshadowed by Zero.

Skebaba

Well they don't necessarily need the Relic as a Catalyst, per se. It's rly only so you can roll a good character because you stricten the Summon parameters. If you had no Catalyst, it'd just Summon a random Servant that best fits your personality.

Samuel Sharpe

Hello. Love your reactions like always and no worries if you missed anything or if you felt like this was a HUGE info dump at some points in this episode. That's perfectly understandable. Even I felt this way when I first watched Fate Zero, which was my first introduction to Fate franchises as a whole. So again it's understandable. If I can give any kind of advice, just take your time and don't fret. This series is kind of a slow start, but it does get better after an episode or two. But whatever you feel like doing after this initial episode is up to you. Either way, I hope you enjoy this series at your own pace. Keep up the good work. : )

KillerB

I myself, started with unlimited blade works before when it came out and 1 year later or something I found out about fate zero and when I watched zero I was never confused whatsoever and in fact it was very easy to know what was happening. Since I learned everything in unlimited blade works slowly and they didn't dumped anything on you at once

After watching both zero and ubw I was so glad I started with zero. Watching ubw would spoil the end of zero and would make it not near as exciting as I experienced it. Glad you made this decision :)
