Idk if you realised but they have been foreshadowing Zeref for a long time. (Not spoilers all have been mentioned in previous episodes). In the first arc he created lullaby the demon flute, in the second arc Delioria was one of Zerefs demons, in the tower of heaven Jellal was trying to create the R-System to revive Zeref. Just giving a reminder. He was mentioned in like one of the first episodes as the Black Wizard Zeref but we never saw who is was until now, he was presumed to be dead.

you should know that fairy tail is way older then new gens and stuff.Maybe naruto and some old animes did like this test/tournament arcs.Fairy tail is not considered new Gen or did things like this arc.Lets say its one of the few who did it first.If i m not wrong fairy tail anime ended in late 2018 but because of long time pauses.

You seem to have forgotten Zeref which is fair cause his name hasn't come up in a minute. But he created the Lullaby demon from the first team mission we saw and was name dropped a bunch earlier on in the series
