If you could watch 497-99 it would be nice, I think it might be filler, but it's feel good interesting filler. at least 497 and 98 are categorized as mostly filler, but still cannon. I was spoiled on this event back in alabasta and it sucked.... Good job getting here whitout being spoiled. one of the saddest parts in Op so it'll get better after feeling a little empty for a couple of days

Leaving the sad feelings apart, Ace's death is necessary for Luffy's development. Nothing makes you realise better how weak you truly are than having someone close to you die in your arms. Akainu could hit Ace regardless of what he tried. Magma burns fire, Ace couldn't make his body fluid (Luffy would die instead) and Akainu also has Haki.

This moment, even when spoiled from assholes and shitty watchmojo thumbnails, made me cry like crazy hard back then too. As a theater actor. I had a few scenes where I had to do breakdown and cry. Replaying this scene mentally basically enabled me to get in that mode on stage. And like in all things show-based. The main character need moments like this to get stronger in life and in body. Thanks for your genuine reaction smf.

There are 3 possible reasons why Akainu was able to hit Ace. Any of them could be true or all of them. 1. He could've been using haki, which can hit logias. 2. Akainu's magma is naturally stronger than fire which makes him Ace's weakness. That's similar to how crocodile's weakness was water, so Luffy could hit him while he was wet despite the fact that crocodile was a logia or when Luffy hit enel cause he was rubber. 3. Ace had to let himself get hit because Akainu would;ve just went through him and hit luffy otherwise.

I am going look at this from a different angle. (Ace death was sad) One of One Piece biggest criticism from the first half was that unless a person is in a flashback, they don't die. (Example Pell). I'm guessing that Oda took that criticism to heart even though he answer with that it is better to let someone live to destroy their dreams. (Going Merry was technically the first death in the present) Usually a writer try to prove something if criticize. Example: Joss Whedon(Avengers) made the episode Hush(nominated for an Emmy) in Buffy the Vampire just because they claim Buffy can only success because of good dialogue so he made the episode have close to no dialogue to prove a point. I think that Avengers Infinity War was also a reaction to some of the criticism of MCU film not having great stake.

If you haven't watched or reacted to opening 13 yet, I would strongly suggest it after watching episode 483. It is personally one of my favorite openings in One Piece.

Man I truly feel for you. After you've had time to get your energy back though, I just want to put some things in perspective. Luffy wasn't just reaching for the vivre card because he felt like it...he did so because Ace put him in that situation by stopping and falling for Akainu's taunts. Also, his body was at it's limit which is why he was on his knees. It's a really tragic moment in the series, and in the manga it makes more sense since Luffy falls to his knees, in the next panel we see him reach for the paper, and then in the panel after that Akainu attacks. It's literally immediately done so it doesn't seem odd for Luffy to reach for it. Lastly, the vivre card is also symbolic and Oda uses it here mainly to confirm to the audience that Ace is actually dead. As for why he chose to kill Ace? It's because Ace mattered.

This is why Game of Thrones George RR Martin series is so special that most people didn't quit after certain moments. (Game of Thrones is king of these moments.) I think this might be the only moment in One Piece that could gives off that feeling of quit a series because it is too hard to continue. (I never got this feeling with this scene but have understood why some fans say this)

That moment when you realize how many swayings that vivre card must have went through between Alabasta and Marineford, and it chose just this moment to drop. Luffy tried to get back a paper that'd let him meet his brother again... and he lost him because of it. Oh, the irony.

All the broken promises....even Bon-chan sacrificed himself in Impel Down hoping that Luffy would save his brother. So many characters hoped Luffy would save Ace. That and the fact that we will NEVER have that moment when Ace and Luffy fight side by side again. As for how Akainu punched Ace: recall Luffy vs Enel. Luffy's rubber directly countered Enel's lightning even though Enel was a Logia type. Similarly, Akainu's Magma was "hotter" than Ace's fire and thus was able to punch Ace; it countered Ace's fire. Welcome to One Piece.

Ace was created to be killed. His purpose was for luffy to grow up and stop being a child. And dont blame luffy. Luffy had nothing to do with it. It was aces own fault for dying because he was stupid. But yes. It is a mistake to say that he won becuase magma is strongeer than fire, then infact fire is far stronger tham magma. Thats just science. Would be better to say that he is stronger in Haki. Would make better sense atleast

Luffy was on his limits, he has no power to stand up, that's not about piece of paper. It's about Energy Hormones that stop working in that time. And about Ace's chest - he hardened his chest to STOP attack. If he dodge it - it would reach Luffy. That's because this attack made such a hole in chest.

Also, you asked why Akainu was able to punch Ace at the end of your reaction, and this will invite spoilers because there are some fighting mechanics that are unexplained as of now. There’s also a possibility that it’s just one fruit being a counter to the other. From Crocodile and Enel, we can see that Logia users, despite being intangible, can be affected by attacks if the attacks are a counter to their own fruit. Luffy’s rubber is a direct counter to Enel’s lightning so Enel could be hurt by Luffy’s hits. Liquid is a direct counter to Crocodile’s Sand Logia so any liquid based attack will hurt Crocodile. Based on what Akainu said, Magma is hot enough to burn even fire. I won’t argue about the science/logic behind that (after all this is a piece of fiction), but I believe the same concept of Devil Fruit counters applies here.

I really loved the reaction probably my favorite one but Luffy isn't to blame for ace's death. that said, i cried for 2/3 of this reaction even though i have seen it so many times, its still so heavy.... but that is exactly why one piece is still my favorite anime ( and i was the biggest fanboy of dragonball in my teens) .... this such an emotional rollercoaster for whats now almost 900 episodes...and that's exactly what establishes a bond between you and the characters

That's not the point. And for example magma is 3000 C and Fire is about 400+ C , there is a fire that hotter than that, but it's blue and more other stuff....And about Akainu's attack - Ace did that on purpose. The make this chest real to slow down the fist. If he dodge it with fire ability - it would reach Luffy.

Well if u want to bring in physics into One One Piece world u have to consider that there are a lot of different fire types. The heat of fire is determined by its color, it goes from red, orange to white. With red being relatively cool fire (which I assume Ace had). So you cant simplify it just like that and say fire is a lot "stronger" than magma. And just as there are different fire types there are different magma types as well and who knows which one Akainu is actually using here. With even Haki, their experience and personal strength involved there is simply no way to tell why the one exactly overpowered the other one. It might even be a combination of all 4 factors.

Omg I felt so bad and seriously wanted to give you a hug because of how much you were shaking and crying. Your reaction is probably the best I've ever seen because a lot of people get spoiled and luffy was only trying to get ace's vivre card because it's important to him. Most people who watch this blame ace for going back to fight Akainu instead of running away. I can never watch this scene and not cry. I even got spoiled for this when I originally watched it and I still cried. Totally understand if you want to take a break as this is definitely a blow to the heart.

Well Oda could chosen to kill either Ace or Luffy. If Oda decide to kill Luffy instead of Ace, this might of flip the whole Shonen Jump genre. If Luffy was nothing more than a Decoy Protagonist, that would of been so different for this series. Switching main characters in the middle of a series would have been an even bigger and surprising move that most author might not have the guts to do because of fan backlash. (Gohan could of replace Goku as main character after the Cell Saga for DBZ but Akira Toriyama never really followed with his original intentions)

This is truly heart wrenching to rewatch. Just for the context, having been saved from the verge of death and having been injected with adrenaline several times despite his exhaustion, Luffy was basically running on borrowed time. That is why Luffy broke down and lost the vivre card. It's not that he stopped paying attention to Ace because of the card, he just did not have any energy left to keep moving, and his tired mind went wandering.

All devil fruits have things that can counter them, like how Mr 3's wax could block Magellan's poison, or how Luffy being rubber let him counter Enel's logia. In this case Akainu's magma fruit is just considered a stronger version of Ace's fire fruit, and so it can overwhelm it. I'm sure Haki had a part in it too, since Haki can let your blows ignore devil fruit powers, as you saw back on Amazon Lily, where Boa's two sisters fought Luffy and were able to hurt him with haki infused punches and the like.

Just so we’re clear. At that point when Luffy was reaching for the paper, Iva’s adrenaline hormone thing had run out. Luffy fell to his knees exhausted before he even saw the paper. He was reaching for the paper because just like with his hat someone he loved gave it to him and told him to hold onto it. But he could barely move regardless. Akainu would have went after him for that reason anyway. I always see people say “if Luffy wasn’t trying to get that paper he wouldn’t have needed to be saved” but that’s not true he couldn’t move it would’ve happened anyway

Well, the adrenaline hormone ran out partly because Luffy stopped moving as well. It’s not solely dependent on time expiration, but also on how the hormones interact with the body. Had Ace not stopped moving, Luffy wouldn’t have stopped either, but since he did stop then Luffy’s body slowed down and in turn his adrenaline levels gave out a bit prematurely. So had Ace not stopped, Luffy likely could have continued running for longer.

Luffy reaching for the paper is an incredible moment in hindsight. Luffy was always chasing after his big brother and always believed his words. He said to keep that vivre card so they could meet again. I'm 100% sure Luffy thought he would keep it so they could meet again someday. And this whole saga was to show that the Straw Hats and Luffy cannot just battle their way through everything like they have before.

If you ever watch the show over again. Yes you will cry the same way. This time I think it was slightly worse because I was empathizing with you having it happen for the first time. Don't blame Luffy with the vivre card. They were pretty far away and Luffy didn't want to loose it. Plus Akainu going for Luffy instead of Ace who was his opponent was a total RDM. The tiny bit of solace is the look of contentment Ace had in death. Also just in case you didn't know Akainu is Red Dog. Aokiji is Blue Pheasant and Kizaru is Yellow Monkey. They are code names.

I can rewatch this entire arc a million times(I've rewatched it like 5-6) and I still shed a stupid amount of tears throughout the entire thing. This is so well written and it is needed to show how weak the strawhats really are. He basically just Lost is crew and lost his brother back to back right before he attempts to go the new world.

Ah, so you're in the camp of people who blame Luffy trying to get the vivre card. I feel you, but I'm gonna say the same thing I say to everyone. Regardless of whether he was trying to pick up a vivre card or just standing there, there's no way Luffy could dodge an attack from an Admiral in the state he was in. Akainu would've attacked him no matter what, and Luffy would've been defenseless anyway. As understandable as it is, Ace is the one who stopped running away and fell for the bait. Everyone else didn't rush in to attack Akainu because they were just trying to get away. I'm not saying I necessarily blame Ace for what he did, but it's certainly not Luffy's fault.

Whenever i rewatch this, a part of me always says 'maybe it will be different this time, maybe ace doesn't get provoked and just runs away' but nope XD and Akainu was able to hit ace because Magma/lava burns hotter than regular fire, its ace's weakness, like how Enel was weak againt Luffy's rubber, or how Crocodile is weak to water, etc

Well I'm sure people told you, but akainu was going to attack luffy and he would not have been able to dodge. The vivre card has nothing to do with ace dying. Akainu(sakazuki) used haki in his fist. Haki can hurt logia types. I don't really fault Sakazuki for anything he did to win this war. well except for killing that one marine.(sure I hate his metods, but they were effective), Ace fell for his taunts. I do think he is a bad guy though. He did kill a lot of innocent men and children back in ohara. I wish him a painful death
