Addie: "Would they be using inches in this time?" Well fun fact, the "Imperial standard" system was used by the british well before they started using the metric system. When America was colonized by the British, it became the standard here too, then later, the British changed and used their newly adopted Metric system, but the Americans kept on using the Imperial standard.

Inches because the metric system comes from Napoleon’s France. Master and Commander is such a solid well built movie. I appreciate them not turning away from the death and horror. Two other good Russell Crowe period films are The 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and LA Confidential (1997). What he’s best at, as an actor, is making you understand the depths of his characters.

What a great movie! I watched Greyhound with Tom Hanks a few months ago and there's definitely some thematic similarities between the two films, they're both very tight looks at life on a warship facing a tough opponent. Greyhound is a pretty good film, but Master and Commander definitely feels like a masterwork, it really does such a fantastic job getting you hooked watching not just the fine details of sailing a 19th century warship but also presenting so many characters with personal hooks to make you interested in them as individuals as well.
