The next two episodes aren't the end of the season. The season was cancelled in mid-run and the final episodes hadn't even finished being written yet. Joss Whedon expected a full season (back then, that was 20+ episodes) and multiple seasons, after his success with "Buffy" and "Angel", so he had intended to spread the stories out over a multi-season arc. So, yeah, no closure in the show itself. In fact, a few of the episodes you're watching weren't even aired in the show's first run because of scheduling shenanigans by Fox, including some episodes being pre-empted for other content and others shown out of order. But, thankfully, we got the movie.

Thank you for this clarification Thomas!! I was wondering about the timing of the cancellation and when things would start wrapping up (I'm glad at least they got a movie after being cancelled!!!)

I’ve read that somewhere in and around the filming of this episode is when they found out that they had been cancelled, and that the crew’s sadness in the funeral scene was real because of that.

Yeah that is what Joss said in a commentary track back on the DVDs or blu-rays or whatever I had it on… This is the episode they were told they were canceled and reportedly, the scene in the kitchen where Mal, Zoe and Inara was the first one they went back to on the set… Which was a bit ironic they needed to be happy. Side note, Jonathan Woodward, the actor who played their army buddy in this one, was in Buffy, Angel and this series. And in each series he plays a role that has a huge pivotal change on the story (For the other two series, Buffy, he is a vampire that helps Buffy solve some issues as well as realize there is a huge and present danger. In Angel he is the person who sets into motion Fred’s death which to this day is still the saddest death in media I have ever seen, even above Tom Holland in Infinity War). Honestly this series I think was the smallest impact with his character but it sets Mal and Book into a more trusting supporting situation, I feel its where Kalee and Simon get a bit more solid, the drive of Jayne being out here doing all this to help a sick sibling explains why money is so important to him and we actually see River coherent enough to be in a very crowded location and be mostly functional. I am sure these storylines were arching forward in many other episodes but this one is where I really see them being more solidified as less rag-tag-crew and becoming a more cohesive family (Chosen Family is often an underlying foundation for a lot of what Joss has made).
