Here's the full length reaction to War of the Worlds, the winner of this month's spinning wheel! Does Steven Spielberg have a fascination with aliens? I didn't realize it until this movie, but it seems like he likes to tell alien stories haha. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorites. It’s far from perfect, but I still have a lot of fun with it whenever I watch it. They also filmed a lot of if not far from where I live and went to college. The soldiers and Marines in the battle scenes were portrayed by real soldiers and Marines and the first convoy you see were guys from my dad’s old unit, the 29th Infantry Division.

Happy Wednesday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed War of the Worlds (2005). This is one of my favorite Tom Cruise & Steven Spielberg movies. It's definitely one intense ride from start to finish. I even own this movie on DVD in both Widescreen (1.85:1) & Full Screen (1.33:1) formats. One of my favorite scenes in the movie was the aftermath of the plane crash because of how real it looks. I've also visited the plane crash site on the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood. You & Jeremy should visit there. Here's some behind the scenes footage of how the plane crash site was filmed. On the tour, they also play a clip of Ray trying to get Robbie to get onto the van to leave.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvHWpn4lHnc And before the plane crash site was built for WOTW, it used to be where the abandoned Site B worker village from The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) & Jurassic Park III (2001) stood. Nicki Minaj & Rihanna also filmed the music video for their song Fly at the crash site. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n71KUiWn1I

Tom Cruise's 'aging former jock' shtick pretty much peaks here, especially given his infamous couch-jumping incident on The Oprah Winfrey Show in promotion of this movie.

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 This is easily one of my favorite Tom Cruise starring and Steven Spielberg directed films. And it's got a great supporting cast list as well. For more Tom Cruise, I very highly recommend the 1983 movie "The Outsiders". And for more Dakota Fanning, I highly recommend the 2006 "Charlotte's Web". Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

...and that incident was mentioned in Nuckin' Futs! - The JibJab Year in Review 2006.

Another Tom Cruise/Steven Spielberg movie that I also suggest is Minority Report (2002). #MinorityReportForAddieCounts And I also have TWO Tony Scott movie suggestions for you, both with a main actor from this movie. Days of Thunder (1990), with Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman, and Man on Fire (2004), with Denzel Washington & Dakota Fanning. #DaysOfThunderForAddieCounts #ManOnFire2004ForAddieCounts #MoreTonyScottForAddieCounts

You guys may already know but the old couple at the end of the film are the actors from the original film.

Hey addie, fun fact, This movie combines both the radio broadcast and the book very well. Back befroe TVs were invented there was a War of the Worlds radio broadcast that was so convincing aliens were attacking it created mass panic around the country. Also the reason germs are the cause death here, and while it may sound cheesy at first. The story of War Of the Worlds was written in the 1800s where germs and medicine were just begining to be understood. So a story was written by H.G Wells that would factor in germs and how humans were so vulnerable to them. He wrote a "what if" story where if aliens invaded would they also be subject to germs like humans. You should read the book!

To answer your question about Spielberg being obsessed with aliens ... his next film is about aliens. So ... there's your answer! While I hate that abrupt cut in this film to them just arriving in Boston, some of the moments in this film are just so great. I also highly recommend you watch "Minority Report" as it's another great sci-fi film he's done.

Nice reactions to this one. Although it's not one of my favorites from Spielberg, it's still a good movie. I second the opinion below about another great Spielberg + Tom Cruise sci-fi collaboration: Minority Report (2002). 😃 Another good "alien-invasion-earth-fights-back" sci-fi movie if you're in the mood would be Battle: Los Angeles (2011).

Got to say this was one of my favorite reactions to this movie. I loved your appreciation of the scene where Ray kills the guy in the basement to save Rachel, that's such an intense moment and it really shows how far a parent will go for their kids.

Addie might enjoy an earlier star-making turn for Tom Cruise - a coming-of-age story of sorts, "Risky Business" (1983), if she hasn't already seen it.

This is the journey of a crap dad becoming not a crap dad. And I get that. So Robbie is at least in part a product of that. But Robbie sucks. I'm actually annoyed that he's alive in the end. That's perhaps a terrible thing to say. But...%$&@ Robbie.

REDR58

I’d highly recommend watching the original at some point.

A fun film, it has sort of a similar feel to Cloverfield where it's essentially following the main characters as they stumble along trying to survive a massive alien attack. As far as comparing this to the 1938 Orson Wells radio broadcast The War of the Worlds, they touch on some of the same themes but the way the story is presented is very different. In the radio show pretty much the entire first half is played as if they were actual radio news broadcasts describing the alien attacks unfolding across the globe. That's why the show famously created such a huge panic, there were a bunch of people that tuned in after the show had started and to them it sounded like actual "breaking news". The second half of the radio show is a more traditional format where it follows one of the survivors in the aftermath of the attack. Its ending is essentially the same as this movie, where the attack is thwarted because the aliens can't handle Earth's microbes. (Which seems like a HUGE oversight on their part! They planned this attack for how long and didn't realize microbes might be a problem? D'oh!🤦‍♂️) Anyway fun film, a good 8/10 for me. 🙂 P.S. Between this film, Edge of Tomorrow, and Oblivion, Tom Cruise definitely has the worst luck with alien invasions!

The after-credits scene should have been Robbie sitting in class saying, "and that's why I didn't write my report"

"Battle: Los Angeles" (2011) is a very underrated movie, in my opinion. I look at it not so much as an alien invasion movie but more as a movie about a military unit (and its workings) where the enemy just happens to be an alien force.

Saw this in the theaters. This is a messy film, not one of Spielberg's best and hot take: Dakota Fanning's acting annoyed me. The most memorable scene in the film is the cylinder scene where the Tripod come out from the ground, adapting their first appearance from H.G. Wells' novel. I remember it being a difficult read in middle school and the 2005 film is as I said 'messy', in my opinion. It doesn't know what it wants to be, be its own thing or being a remake of the 1953 film or a loose adaption of Wells' groundbreaking sci-fiction masterpiece. I will applaud the film for one though, its depictions of the Martians and the Tripods are absolutely terrifying and the horrible roars are nightmare fuel.

As a veteran myself, I can say "absolutely true" about the nature and spirit of the film. Also true it is both underrated and underappreciated. "Retreat hell... we just got here!" 😁
