Here's the full length reaction to Theatrical Cut of The Abyss! This movie was not what I was expecting AT ALL! I always thought that this was a somewhat scary shark-like creature movie, but that was not the case! I watched this before Constantine had pulled ahead in the poll, so I'm watching Constantine soon as well :) Enjoy!

Happy Wednesday, Addie. The Abyss (1989) is one of my all-time favorite James Cameron movies alongside Avatar (2009). I own the 1993 Special Edition of the movie on DVD in both Widescreen (2.39:1) & Full Screen (1.33:1) formats and on 4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray. BTW, Chris Elliott, whom you recognized on Schitt's Creek, was also in Groundhog Day (1993) & Scary Movie (2000).

Since you watched the Theatrical Cut of the movie, these restoration notes, from pages 3 to 9 of the enclosed insert booklet of the 2000 DVD, will explain all of the scenes that were added back into the 1993 Special Edition of the movie. *Page 3: https://www.michaelbiehn.co.uk/gallery/albums/uploads/abyss/media/abyss_special_edition_b3.jpg Page 4: https://www.michaelbiehn.co.uk/gallery/albums/uploads/abyss/media/abyss_special_edition_b4.jpg Page 5: https://www.michaelbiehn.co.uk/gallery/albums/uploads/abyss/media/abyss_special_edition_b5.jpg Page 6: https://www.michaelbiehn.co.uk/gallery/albums/uploads/abyss/media/abyss_special_edition_b6.jpg Page 7: https://www.michaelbiehn.co.uk/gallery/albums/uploads/abyss/media/abyss_special_edition_b7.jpg Page 8: https://www.michaelbiehn.co.uk/gallery/albums/uploads/abyss/media/abyss_special_edition_b8.jpg Page 9: https://www.michaelbiehn.co.uk/gallery/albums/uploads/abyss/media/abyss_special_edition_b9.jpg *The quote by Friedrich Nietzsche is: "When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you."

For those of you who are curious, Addie watched the Theatrical Cut of the movie that's on Hulu.

This movie had one of the most hellish productions in movie history. To this day, Ed Harris still refuses to talk about it. 🤔 This was also from the absolutely stacked summer of '89 -- the only other title from which you've seen so far is "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." There was also Tim Burton's "Batman;" "Ghostbusters 2;" "Lethal Weapon 2;" "Licence to Kill" (the 16th James Bond movie); "Star Trek: The Final Frontier;" "Karate Kid III;" "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids;" "When Harry Met Sally...;" "Uncle Buck;" "Parenthood;" "UHF;" and "Weekend at Bernie's."

Happy Wednesday Addie! 😊 Another great sci-fi movie directed by James Cameron. Definitely looking forward to watching this one later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

Love this film but Boooooo not streaming in the UK. Wonder if a VPN will work?

Alex Tan

It's still a remastered version but it's that of the original theatrical cut.

'Constantine' is a phenomenal film. A great comic book film. I'm a huge fan of the character of John Constantine from the Hellblazer comics. Fans love the 2005 film, however Keanu's portrayal of Constantine is divided. From the grapevine, Keanu is an okay Constantine or a terrible version of the character. Knowing the comics and seeing the film multiple times, I can see both sides, personally, I believe Matt Ryan is the best Constantine, although Keanu does have his moments. Unlike 'The Abyss', 'Constantine' is horror.

That's why I still prefer physical media; streaming services have continually proven to be too unreliable in terms of watching a particular movie whenever you want. 🤷‍♂️

REDR58

Too bad it wasn’t the extended version, as that’s the better one.

YUP! This is one of those 'never seen before' movies too and it was incredible at the theaters!!!

It's been a long time since I've seen the theatrical release (literally since it was released in the theater), and I very recently watched another reactor viewing the correct version (heh, just kidding), so I'm curious to see the differences.

PHILLIP CORNISH

Yes just found out it's banned due to a rat underwater scene. You can't make this stuff up. Lol

Thomas Yanez

If you get the chance, you should get your hands on the Special Edition and just re-watch the last half hour, for the director's true (and a little preachy) vision for the ending of the movie. There are other differences, but nothing that really matters if you just want the bigger, (and arguably) better ending.

I'm not a water guy at all but I enjoy "water based" movies, hahaha

"SIR, YOU ARE INSANE!" 😁 That was great! For something that turned out to NOT be so "monstery", you handled your expectations nicely. Your reaction to the "drowning" revival scene was very heartfelt. I know, that scene gets me every time. 😍

Fun fact Addie: As somebody who has a fear of the deep ocean "Thalassophobia" this movie is VERY much a horror movie. I ironically served in the Navy, which is where i discovered this fear. 😵‍💫

Saw this in the theater back then, and saw some behinds the scenes of how they did it. Amazing stuff for the time. I still love this movie, but I do not care for the extended edition as much as the theatrical.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe the mosquito just enjoys submarine movies? It says they are all the buzz. ;)

Around the time this movie came out I had a brother and sister rat that looked just like the one in this movie. They were funny, and always tried to run in their wheel together, inevitably catching a tail now and then. One day I came home and the brother had got his head caught in the wheel and died. His sister was so sad, when I reached in to pick him up she bit at my finger, but only slightly, as if to say "leave him alone" but she was too sad to really bite. :(

HeyHeyJK

A VPN should work. I use one sometimes to watch shows from the UK that aren't streaming in the US. Worth a try!

PHILLIP CORNISH

Cheers will give this a go. I have ordered the DVD from Amazon. But have got to wait a few days. Then I have to resync to Addies stream.

Thomas Wetherell

Hi Addie, I know I’m a few days late to this reaction but interestingly enough that liquid oxygen tank they have in the movie is actually real. The only people who are allowed to breathe it are actual test divers so Ed Harris had to hold his breath when he uses it in the movie, but they did it on the rat for real (don’t worry, she was fine) so that wasn’t just a sci-fi device.

Philip Davetas

I've watched both versions of this movie over the years and I could never bring myself to like it. And it came out during an epic summer of movies too. And this was the one I was most excited about and it's the one that disappointed me the most. I remember reading about a lot of production delays at the time and finally they released the special edition which came with an amazing documentary that chronicles the insanity of making this flick. Everything from how much people hated James Cameron, to people having psychotic breaks, to set disasters, cast replacements, etc. It's worth it if you're into filmmaking and that sort of thing.
