Summary: Sent to a converted castle in the Pacific Northwest used by the U.S. government as a psychiatric institution for military personnel who fought in the Vietnam War, the unorthodox psychiatrist, Colonel Kane, has a lot on his plate already, trying to figure out whether the inmates feign insanity or not. Still struggling with his inner demons, Kane is particularly intrigued by the psychotic former astronaut, Captain Cutshaw, whose metaphysical enquiries trigger a feverish recurring nightmare. More and more, as Kane and Cutshaw engage in intense theological debates over the existence of God and evil, the troubled scientist finds himself at a dead-end, in need of a brilliant but reckless plan to determine the root of the soldiers' complex mental breakdowns. Can Colonel Kane provide proof of an afterlife?  This video contains affiliate links. If you click on one of them, I'll receive a commission.

Any film smart enough to have a Puli in it knows what it's doing.

Looks interesting, The mix of tones reminds me a little of 'The Guardian' although that might just be the 'Exorcist' connection as that film was Friedkin's return to horror. It had a nightmare production and like other 90s films had two different cuts a PG-13 (directed by Alan WF Smithee) in the US and a 16+(UK18) in the ROW which Friedkin left his name on.

This is an incredible movie! I think you are spot on - it is hard to sum up and there is no way to properly compare it to anything.

I loved this film. At the time I felt it was a mash-up of Castle Keep, Equis and Catch 22 but it stands on its own

I ran into this film over 20 years ago without knowing anything about it. It's a strange film, and I understand how it could have been lost, particularly as New Hollywood was ending (and especially in places released as "Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane"). I also found it very moving. It could be argued whether the denouement needed to be as definite as it was, given the transformation we see in Scott Wilson's character before he finds the medal, but it's effective.
