Stephen Crane

To misquote Ava Gardner - Greenland seems the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world.

Disaster movie... can we include man made screwups? in which case I'd throw down the 1959 "On the Beach", from which Stephen gets hid misquote. Not as chilling as Chutes book, it has some brilliant cinematography.

One I recommend is 'Last Night' from 1998. This is a sort of pre disaster film, made as a comment on y2k fears, everyone knows the world is ending at midnight and you follow an assortment of characters as they face up to the last night. Including most poignantly David Cronenberg as a gas company executive who is personally phoning every customer to apologise that their gas supply will cut off a few seconds before the end. You also never find out exactly what is ending the world. If you can find it it is well worth watching.

Definitely. The images of people resolutely refusing to face their ultimate end, having parties, riding bikes (and it takes a while to realize it's because there's no longer gas for the cars) and having finally to grasp that their only choice is a quick death or a slow one...

I adore this film. Been haunted by it ever since I saw it.

One that comes to mind is actually a Twilight Zone , "Two", starring Charles Bronson and Elizabeth Montgomery as the last survivors on opposite sides of a war that has wiped out the human race. They are both wearing uniforms, were both in the armies of their opposing sides. There is hardly a word of dialogue, mostly to establish that they speak different languages. They aren't thrilled to see each other. But all they have, is each other.
