This week, Robin looks at, not the first Hitchcock film, but the first 'Hitchcock Film', establishing so many of the familiar elements that we see throughout the career of the Master of Suspense.

52 Weeks of Hitchcock: 6. The Lodger

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog is not the first Hitchcock film, but it feels like the first 'Hitchcock Film'. Robin looks at how this film established so many of the tropes that we now see as uniquely Hitchcockian.

Really good episode. I can recommend the Blu-Ray which has the soundtrack by Nitin Sawhney and the LSO it really does work well.

Whant a nice sweater, Robin! :) I don't know much about silent films at all, but it seems to me that one reason Hitch's are enjoyable are, as you pointed out, the humor. Unless a film was supposed to be a flat out comedy, like with Keaton or Chaplin, a lot of directors seemed to skip over humor. But of course humor done right is terrific world and character builder,

Humour is so important in Hitchcock films, it reflects his personality as much as anything else.

I'm thinking the hair and Van Dyke reminds me of Fandral, a character from the Thor films. Or possibly Errol Flynn as George C. Custer... Robin, go get a sword and take a swash at a buckle or two.

The Criterion Collection has a really excellent edition of The Lodger along with Downhill featured as an extra.
