1931’s Dracula had made horror one of the most profitable genres in Hollywood and made Lugosi an in-demand star. By 1936 the genre was defunct and the actor struggling for work. The next fifteen years would be the most volatile period of Lugosi’s career and its rises and falls were mirrored by those of the character that made him famous.

This was wonderful, thank you so much.

Grand. Perceptive, generous, insightful, entertaining. What a pleasure.

Brilliant! Actors indelibly associated with roles must include Sean Connery as Bond and Christopher Lee as Dracula. However, unlike Connery & Lee, Lugosi's accent was integral to his characterization of Dracula, making him forever THE voice of the Count. Since it was his natural accent, and quite foreign to US/UK audiences, no matter what part he played after that, he sounded like Dracula. Although Connery never tried to change his Scots accent, it just didn't scream Bond at you, the way Lugosi's exotic voice sang of the Carpathians.

Guys, you out did yourselves. Bloody brilliant! What other roles would I have liked to see him in? Pretty much everything. I'd have liked to see him in the Sidney Greenstreet role in 'Casablanca'. Boagart and Lugosi... wow. Or How about Cardinal Richlieu in the 1948 Three Musketeers? That would be casting against type. But generally, the lead scientist / Evil Wizard / 'Source-of-all-human-knowledge" (TM) roles in such flicks as The Devil-Doll, Forbidden Planet, or 1947's Sinbad the Sailor. Can you see him against Doug Fairbanks Jr?

Thanks for the kind comments. It is always with a sense of relief and dread when we finish one of these. It is always a race to the finish line (this video finished uploading 10mins before it's scheduled time) and now we feel we have to raise the bar. That said the amount of research done for these videos increases and often it can inform future videos. Looking back I think we would do Universal Frankenstein very differently now... and perhaps in time we shall.

Apart from Edward van Sloan Universal really seems to have invested great effort in casting the 'good guys' as bleak and square as possible. I still wonder, if this is a modern point of view and all those Harkers and Dr. Brewsters indeed were the idol of american masculinity at their time - or if even the producers back then at least sensed, that the 'evil one' would be the real star, despite the billing and payment granted.

Wonderful video. Both parts really are great.

I've mentioned it before, but even in something like William "One Take" Beaudine's Voodoo Man, Lugosi committed totally to the character's tender, heartbroken love for his wife. He always understood that underneath every layer of monster or mad scientist there was a romantic, who would give the world for love and consider it well lost.
