I agree totally that life size spiders are much more frightening than the giant constructs in horror or sci films.

If ever a movie poster oversells what's in the actual film, the poster for The Giant Spider Invasion is it.

My online movie group saw this a few days ago (nice coincidence, that) and i found myself thinking that the most intelligent character in the film was the giant spider, which is never a good sign.

From what I can recall, the only film to do spiders well was 'Arachnophobia', with another great character by John Goodman. The 'Food of the Gods', 'The Giant Tarantula' and this thing use mechanical constructs mounted on cars. The problem being, due to the mechanical problems of moving 8 huge legs, they can never get them to move fast enough... and a lot of our fear of spiders comes from their sudden speed.

The crystal spider in Krull was good. Done by Stephen Archer who was recommended by Harryhausen.

You say that the scientists don't have much screen time, but in my recollection it is still way too much of two people in a room spouting technobabble at eachother.

This is an epic poster - makes 8 legged freaks look tame and that was supposed to be OTT.
