Summary: A powerful warrior named Kain, skilled in the use of many weapons, discovers two worthy opponents while traveling through a small village. There he also encounters a ravishing sorceress. His holy warrior gig now over, Kain roams the earth as a mercenary, selling his unequaled skill at arms to the highest bidder. He'll find plenty of work in the village of Yamatar. The commoners there are exploited or enslaved by a pair of rival warlords named Zeg and Bal Caz, who spend most of their time struggling for control of Yamatar's well, just about the only thing of real value for thousands of square miles. Kain may be just a sword for hire these days, but the old Homerac in him is rankled by what he sees in the village, and just for the hell of it, he decides to bring down both tyrants.

Is it wrong that this film made me want to hang myself in a wardrobe?

By Kurasawa? I'm gonna say Sanjuro. We see Mifune stretching his acting skill and adding a slightly more comedic element to the character. And for Leone - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. "Once upon a time in the west" is a close second, mostly because of that amazing intro scene. But GBU pretty much defines the whole spaghetti western genre.

You've got to admire their approach to nudity. Not just some glimpse in a contrived bathing/undressing scene, simply have your actress topless in every shot. 'When we say gratuitous nudity, we do mean GRATUITOUS.'

Yes. A Wardrobe is a totally unsuitable place for hanging persons. Try the ceiling fan; the rotating movement gives a nice effect.

Forget the movie, I'm going to have nightmares about the artwork showing Carradine as Schwarzenegger in a posing pouch....

Yeah, at least you usually knew what you were getting into with 1980's B-Movies. If you were going to watch a cheapo Sword & Sorcery flick, you could usually count on cheap sets that you would swear you'd just seen in two other movies, bad peasant wigs, amputation of limbs and, or, heads, and gratuitous boobs. You could also get away with more back then. Heck we just watched Clash of the Titans last night (not to in any way put CotT in the same class as this movie) and, for a PG film, it sure did have a couple of instances of gratuitous nudity for a PG "Family" film. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. As someone who was a kid in the late-70's/early-80's, I was always grateful for the Fantasy films that I could either legitimately see in a theater or could, at the very least, get past my parents on HBO or at the video store. They tended to be... educational. I definitely would have had a hard time justifying this one to the parents, though.

Ooh, nice! I've been wanting to watch this one for a whiiiile. The Deathstalker movies are great stuff. Much better than other movies in the sword-and-sorcery cycle, scarce as it was. I notice this film nicked some of the music from that! haha

I haven't seen too much Kurosawa but the favorite so far is Rashomon. It does a great job of creating characters that are telling different stories but all of whom you believe, even as you can see the conflicting tales can't be reconciled. Leone is GBU, for Lee Van Cleef's fantastically named Angel Eyes. I think his character really does the work of carrying the film so Eastwood's can be enigmatic and pose with his cheroot.

As for the full on commitment to nudity, I find it oddly refreshing in that they weren't pretending to be "arty" with the boobs. "Ya want tits? HERE'S TITS. It's a Playboy spread come to life, boys. Nothin' but breasts from start to finish! " And honestly, the prosthetic ones on the dancer look pretty damn good considering the obvious budget constraints. They knew they couldn't cheap out on that effect--if they looked gimmicky the whole bit of "FOUR TITS! YOU CAN'T SAY WE DON'T GIVE VALUE FOR MONEY!" thing would simply collapse.
