Do you care what we do when are not watching films?  Here are some behind scenes photos from a shoot I recently did.  As you may or may not know Robin and I met at the London Comedy Writers, this project comes from one of the other writers in that group.  Having been performed on stage we decided to shoot for reals.

Above, writer / director Nina Crane pulls us pint. We started shooting at 6am to get the shots done before the pub opened.

Brits might recognise Nuts Magazine regular Lucy Pinder on the left,  Tom Slatter might have appeared on your TV screens for the Heart Foundation and Beth Granville is writer and star of BBC Radio sitcom Foiled.

Dark Corners regulars will recognise the location from our advent calendars, The Ugly Duck is old Tannery, with some great locations and textures.  It was quite fun lighting this space, bringing out all the lights I had access too.

After shooting outside, we bought the actors into the warmth of the garage,  this gave us a little more control on the environment as we wanted to add more smoke,  this proved tough outside as the wind would just blow it away and the machine makes too much noise to keep setting off during a take.

The boom pole got left in the car, so on day 2 of the shoot we had to use a broom.

Jon Hansler who plays Jack can currently be seen in as Basil Fawlty in London's West End.

A glimpse at balding head as I struggle to find a place to shoot the reverse angle.  The orginal pub we had booked pulled out a week before the shoot due to the content of the script.  This proved to be a blessing as the new pub was a closer period match, although we only confirmed the location the day before the shoot.

A wider shot of the exterior location.

So what next?  The film is now with the editor, it will then hit the festivals.  It was fun to shoot, but I am not sure if lifting the script from stage and putting it to screen will be 100% successful.   We were hampered by time, actor's availability and funding.  But it was a fun experience.

If you have any questions about the shoot please drop them down below and I will answer them in our next Patreon Q&A video.

Anyone wondering about the 360 seance film,  it is now in the FX stage, so that will be out sometime....

What are some difficulties in this kind of work that those outside if might not realize it? Were any techniques or tricks learned from watching films used? What was the identity of Jack The Ripper anyway?

I love the look of the film, but you’re right about taking stage projects to film.... hard to take away that stage feel.
