I usually agree with you guys on most things, but have to say I disagree about broadcasting the conventions. They're party events - them being broadcast to such a degree on the news isn't public interest, it's party interest. The public demonstrate, from their viewing figures, that they have no interest - and of course they don't. Is it "news" that a party leader bigged up his own party and put down the other one? No. I don't know how things work in the USA these days, but the broadcast as described in this episode is basically days and days of free advertising for the two main parties. If they were broadcasting office holders, making announcements in their capacity as a member of the government, legislature, or whatever then sure. But they're broadcasting party apparatchiks, or office holders in their capacity as party apparatchiks. They shouldn't be broadcast unless something newsworthy happens, or the party pays for it to be broadcast as an advertisement.
