Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Season 4, Episode 7

I love the touch that Naomi identifies Trent as "that Harvard guy". I also like what they do with Beth, I find it weird how much I like her despite almost never seeing her and knowing nothing about her. It's like they packed an unnatural amount of likeability in very few appearances. I guess it's something about how every scene we see her in has her react to a major character and it's in a way that's 1) positive, 2) insightful and 3) unique enough for her to stand out and not feel *too much* like she's just a spokesperson for the show. She sees Valencia as funny when nobody else does. She calls out Josh's lack of self-consciousness as cool (and brings out a better aspect of Valencia in the process), something I think the show agrees with in that episode but few other characters do (notably our main POV Rebecca struggles with this as much as Valencia does, cf how Nathaniel got in her head in S2). Now here she kind of speaks for the audience in being super-proud of Rebecca, but throws in the personal touch of being too WASPy to look (but liberated enough to say so out loud!). Like, we know nothing about her except what we can guess from how she reacts to the characters we do know but that's somehow enough to draw a distinct and likeable personality. For me at least. She seems super-secure (her style, her standing up to her girlfriend), the kind of person who sees the good in everyone but also one who's intelligent enough as an observer that she sees what's *actually* good and not just what she wants to see. Maybe something that's important about her in the show is that she feels like an aspirational figure: someone so secure and happy with who they are that they can look at all the shenanigans around them with a benevolent eye but never get drawn into the mess. Maybe it's appropriate that she showed up so late in the show. When you think of it every character in this show is either majorly messed up in some way (most main characters), or is a stable and healthy person on paper but has an affect that undercuts it (Darryl being Darryl, Hector having his scared wallflower vibe, Heather with her lively vocal tones), or is White Josh who seems kind of like the picture of normalcy/voice of reason most of the time but that voice of reason thinks everyone else on the show sucks. I mean, "is judgy". Beth seems like a kind of non-judgy White Josh, and it feels right that she appears in the tail end of the show when the characters are becoming self-actualized enough to deserve her positivity. Or put more cynically: having her be there, an obviously intelligent observer, saying positive things about the characters helps sell their self-actualization. Now that I've thought all that through all I can say is: good on Valencia for nailing THAT character as a girlfriend. I wonder if it says something about Valencia as a character but I've already gone on too long I think.

Also, I love the Astrea reveal (and I love how you guys anticipated it) but I won't lie, when rewatching the show it makes the scene where Heather entrusts Astrea in Rebecca a little sad. I'll also say, one thing that I'm not sure holds up that well on rewatch compared to on watching the episode in isolation or the first time but I'm happy for counter-arguments, is: Rebecca puts a HEAVY emphasis on honesty in this episode doesn't she. It's what the whole episode is about, her "being honest now" and her learning to balance that. In isolation it's a great theme, and I like what the episode does with it so I'm glad it exists despite everything, I'm just not sure it really fits with what comes before. Yes, Rebecca has had a historical issue with lying so being honest is an important thing for her to experiment with, and that's an important thing I think she learned at the end of season 3. Buuuut... this is episode 7 of season 4. Last episode we saw her discover she felt ready to date again, now she's dating. The episode before that was her dealing with abandonment, and more generally coming to grips with her tendency to go off the deep end when she feels too much; next episode was her relating to different people. We could see the issues of one episode be set up or worked out in the ones around it. We've also seen her doing normal white lies the whole time. Why is it THIS episode she goes for radical honesty? Why is that suddenly her defining trait as "New Rebecca" when it's not a flaw we've seen her grapple with before ? Like, it's a legit flaw it's good for her to grapple with but having THIS episode be ALL ABOUT IT when she showed not sign of grappling with it before seems a bit weird to me. Feels like the kind of thing that could have merited a little set-up an episode or two before.

This show is amazing as far as character growth is concerned. This is not the same Valencia at all and makes total sense that she is with Beth! We never would have predicted that this is how all the characters end up!

I think they're making room for a back slide. I think they wanted to get all the growth out of the way to show that she is still struggling. We haven't watched the new episode yet but it felt like they were hinting at it.
