To answer your question about the level of realism....kinda. I'd say pretty much everything that Philip and Elizabeth get up to is plausible / actually happened, just not with any of the regularity or frequency, and very rarely was any of the 'action' stuff performed by the Illegals, who were far too valuable to risk doing those kinds of James Bond shenanigans. Jack Barsky's autobiography (an actual Illegal who was arrested by the FBI several years after he stopped operating) is a fascinating read. His activities were fairly mundane. There's a few Wired interviews and such online, but avoid the videos where Barsky breaks down movie and TV scenes, since those contain spoilers for later episodes of The Americans. He correctly scoffs that an Illegal would never do those things, which is mostly true, but that's not to say the incidents themselves never happened. It's hard to judge the effectiveness of the Operation Ghost Stories Illegals, since they were betrayed to the FBI very early on, so they no doubt experienced a lot of 'bad luck' in recruitments and penetrations.

Yeah I get that it has to be dramatized and way exaggerated for the show to work. Regardless, it's a blast and it makes me wanna read more about this era.

I think Haig was trying to portray that the government wasn't spiraling by stating he was "in control". Unfortunately for everyone, he was not even close to the right person to be saying that (Secretary of State), he should have let C.J. Cregg do it and all would have been fine. ;) Originally airing on February 20, 2013, 'In Control' is Episode 4 of Season 1 of The Americans. It is the 4th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.1, placing it as the #7 ranked episode of this season and #2 out of all the episodes shown so far.
