The man who got his leg cut off was named Guy - hence the "Guy walks into an advertising agency" Lane trying to hide his glasses is meant to signal how people viewed any kind of disability back in the day. Wearing glasses made you look weak. Especially in Britain. Guy getting his foot chopped off - he will be a disabled man. Doesn't matter how talented.
